I snuck away from my official meetings in Santiago, Chile 🇨🇱 , to visit the iconic Antigua Fuente Alemana restaurant on the grand Alameda Avenue. It’s a cozy snack shop that’s been owned by the Siri family for decades. It was trashed by violent rioters during Chile’s civil unrest in the fall of 2019, and owner Carlo Siri seriously considered just shutting it down. But he resolved to rebuild, and thereby saved dozens of jobs. I was inspired by his story, which underscores an important point: governments have not only the right but the obligation to protect their law-abiding people and businesses from violence. If they’re unable or unwilling to do so, they won’t survive long. ¡Felicitaciones Carlo por tu resiliencia y valor! The pork sandwich was also amazing.
