The first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize, the first individual to be awarded two Nobel Prizes and still today the only individual with two Nobel Prizes in two different scientific categories: Marie Skłodowska Curie. Skłodowska Curie developed the term radioactivity, discovered the chemical elements polonium and radium and contributed to develop new cancer treatments. For her scientific dedication and remarkable breakthroughs, she was awarded the 1903 physics prize and the 1911 chemistry prize. Learn more: bit.ly/4qGyRS1 #InternationalWomensDay

@NWSBayArea @CA_DWR @NWSReno @NWSSacramento @NWSHanford Better metrics are the Sierra Nevada Precip Indices which capture both rainfall and the Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) of snow events. This plus the reservoirs all being at or above normal give a more complete picture.

❄️ In the N Hemisphere, reduced winter sunlight at high latitudes leads to colder temps & the formation of ice along the E coast of 🇬🇱 Greenland. 🛰 #CopernicusEU Sentinel-2 #ImageOfTheDay shows the region illuminated by the low sun, which creates typical elongated shadows.

As @chrisd_jones says, cooling from aerosols acted to increase the effective carbon budget per degree of global warming in the 20th century, but is expected to be less important in the future (in all SSP scenarios) - see panel (b) below. doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

@Lacertko @coxypm @GSI_Exeter @MetOffice_Sci @PFriedling @JoeriRogelj @NinaRaoult @rebecca_varney_ A changing balance of CO2/aerosol forcing means we get a different gradient – but this is surprisingly consistent across scenarios. So again the past behaviour helps constrain the future sensitivity

With 2023 in the books as the hottest year on record by a sizable margin, what is likely to happen in 2024? Four different groups have all provided estimates, which have it similar to (and likely slightly warmer than) 2023, albeit with large uncertainties:
