Years ago when Burnham was Manchester Mayor we raised money for a Manchester homeless charity on a speaking tour which we planned to hand over at an event hastily rearranged after Manchester United cancelled my speaking event at the last minute after the intervention of the Labour MP for the area, Kate Green, now Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester for Policing and Crime.
The head of the charity did not turn up to receive the cash because he said he was told by Burnham's circle that it would not be good for his charity to be associated with me. We ended up walking around the city handing out the money directly to homeless people instead.
Politics is an answer to anything? That's the triumph of hope over experience.
