Music- It binds itself to our memories and emotions whether we like it or not. It takes us back to places and events that made a mark on our lives when we were listening to those songs. I had one of these moments this past weekend when i stumbled across a song by Stephen Wilson Jr. @SWJMusic that encapsulates this premise perfectly. I found Stephen's "I'm a Song" while I was putting together a playlist of Sturgill Simpson tracks that brought me back to a particular late weekend night in 2015 when i discovered Sturgill while sitting at a stoplight on an I-10 exit listening to an NPR broadcast of the Newport Folk Festival. That moment, my emotional state, and my particular destination that night will forever be linked to those Sturgill Simpson songs. Stephen Wilson Jr. is a prime example of the talent and skill that lie in the shadows behind many of the major artists and i'm glad he has stepped out and begun recording and releasing his songs on his own. His "sØn of dad (deluxe)" LP is full of masterpieces and his "Blankets" EP is an absolutely perfect set of covers of 90's and 2000's alt/grunge tracks. I dont typically venture into folk/country/whatever but when it's good music, it's just good music.
