the brooklyn bridge was run for eleven years by a chief engineer who could not leave his bedroom. the bridge had already outlived its designer. it had broken his son's health next. so the orders went down to the towers each day with the one person he trusted: his wife… john roebling designed it and never saw a stone laid. his foot was injured at the ferry slip while he surveyed the site. within weeks the bridge was someone else's to build. his son washington went down into the pressurized caissons under the east river and came up with the bends so bad he never worked on site again. he was 35. by 1872 he could only watch the towers rise through field glasses from a window in brooklyn heights. his wife emily warren roebling began carrying his instructions to the site. then the job quietly became hers. she taught herself higher mathematics, catenary curves, strength of materials, cable construction. for eleven years she argued with contractors, corrected engineers, and managed the trustees, and the men building the bridge started bringing their questions to her. in 1882 the trustees moved to fire washington, a chief engineer nobody had seen on the bridge in a decade. emily went before them and argued the case herself. she won. the title stayed his. the work, as everyone on the river knew by then, was hers, and no title ever came for it. on may 24, 1883 the longest suspension bridge on earth opened, its main span half again longer than anything built before it. emily roebling rode across first, in a carriage, carrying a live rooster for victory. the bridge took thirteen years and all three roeblings. the woman who finished it appears in no engineering record of her time. the bridge she finished has now held for 143 years. the plaque with her name on it took 68.
