@brianlilley @MarcPatrone If police have legitimate reason (with evidence) to suspect that she could actually harm our elected leaders, then it might be worth usage of precious state resources. But if you are going to arrest people who openly hate our leaders, then millions are criminals. Slippery slope.

@brianlilley @MarcPatrone Let's think of things that often don't get you a visit from the cops. Immigration fraud in myriad forms. Fentanyl labs and distribution networks. Smuggling of guns, narcotics and stolen items via borders and ports. Trade of stolen items. Trafficking of minors, sex workers. 1/12

No, police in Canada aren't threatening to arrest people over social media posts. The woman in this video, Nicole Pearen Miske, posted about Prime Minister Carney and made a threat. "'I'm coming for you, you suck twisted fuck. You will get yours!" Police must investigate threats.

@PardyBruce Judges often decide on their own recusal cases. As per case law, there is a "presumption of impartiality". Judges don't have to prove they are impartial. It's presumed. I have asked the SCC to review this and the lack of fact-checking and checks and balances in the system.

It is incumbent on the Chief Justice to publicly recuse himself from hearing the Emergencies Act appeal, or any similar cases. Alternatively, the 8 other justices should pressure him to recuse. Failing to do so would have an irredeemable impact on the Court’s impartiality.

Most of the free world has come to recognize Canada’s Freedom Convoy as one of the most creative, successful, & peaceful demonstrations during a time of unprecedented human rights violations. Except for the SCC’s Chief Justice, who prejudged it as anarchy & a mass hostage event.

@LichTamara In my case, two Fed Court of Appeal judges didn't recuse themselves from adjudicating decisions made by their former colleagues at Justice Ministry. SCC Chief might claim "presumption of impartiality " and "a reasonable observer would not apprehend bias or conflict of interest".

Chief Justice Richard Wagner must recuse himself from these proceedings, should the SCoC grant the Libs leave to appeal. Failure to do so will bring the administration of justice into disrepute….or what’s left of it.
Ann62@EmpireApple

There is this, from the S.C.C. Chief Justice: "In his interview with Le Devoir, Wagner characterized the protest on Wellington Street, where Parliament and the Supreme Court are located, as “the beginning of anarchy where some people have decided to take other citizens hostage.” The article reports Wagner as having declared that “forced blows against the state, justice and democratic institutions like the one delivered by protesters … should be denounced with force by all figures of power in the country.”...his words reflect the government position that the protest was beyond the bounds of civilized behaviour and was properly crushed with state force. The question is not whether his views are correct, but whether they are premature and in the wrong forum. Should any of the Emergencies Act challenges make their way to the Supreme Court, the chief justice will sit in judgment on a dispute about which he appears to have already formed an opinion. Having made his public comments, the chief justice could announce that he will recuse himself from the case to avoid a reasonable perception of bias. However, Wagner is not merely one of many federally appointed judges, but the chief justice of the highest court in the land. His opinion carries influence that cannot be nullified by simple recusal. The harm done to judicial impartiality on the issue of the invocation of the Emergencies Act cannot easily be remedied." nationalpost.com/opinion/bruce-…

In my book Siamese Dreams, people on a Thai island get the "ga-ga effect". They are content staring at the Andaman Sea, even as a tsunami approaches.
Athenaeum Book Club@athenaeumbc

One of the strangest episodes in the Odyssey happens when Odysseus and his men arrive at the island of the Lotus-Eaters. Nothing dramatic seems to happen there at first. No monsters appear, no storms rise, no battle begins. Odysseus sends a few men inland to see who lives there. They meet the Lotus-Eaters, who offer them the fruit of the lotus plant. The fruit is not poisonous and it does not harm the body. What it does instead is erase desire. Anyone who eats it loses the will to return home. The men who taste it suddenly stop caring about Ithaca, their families, or the long journey waiting for them. They do not panic or go mad. They simply want to stay where they are, eating lotus and letting the days pass. When Odysseus finds them, they are calm and content. They do not want to leave the island at all. In a way it would have been easy for Odysseus to let them remain there. The island is peaceful and the men seem happy enough. But Odysseus understands what has happened. The lotus has taken away the one thing that keeps the entire journey alive: the desire to go home. Without that desire the voyage ends. So Odysseus drags the men back to the ships by force. Homer describes them weeping and protesting as they are carried away and tied down to the benches of the ship so they cannot escape. Only once everyone is secured does Odysseus order the ships to push back into the sea. It is a small story compared to the Cyclops or the Sirens, but it reveals something important about the Odyssey. The greatest dangers Odysseus faces are not always monsters or storms. Sometimes they are places where life becomes so comfortable that a man forgets what he was trying to do in the first place.

@TheFanChild Me too. A lot to like about her. I hope she stays healthier than Andreescu and others. Great potential. As Kobe Bryant's father once told me: "potential means you haven't done it yet."

@globaliteman Totally true. I was just impressed by the aggression, and the smarts. And the serve execution. Given that she's still relatively raw/ young. There's a lot to like. And, of course a lot of cautionary tales. I still buy the stock here.
