The forgotten Indian woman trailblazer in British medicine
Her story reminds us that the making of modern medicine was also written by a determined Bengali woman who refused to step aside.

WHO/Europe and the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) will work together to test our new toolkit to help primary health care doctors identify and respond to violence against women and girls (VAWG).
I discussed the next steps in this work in my meeting with WONCA President Dr Pilar Astier Peña and Co-Chair on Family Violence Dr Raquel Gomez Bravo.
Primary care teams are often the first point of contact for women and girls facing violence. They need practical guidance to recognize signs of abuse, respond safely and respectfully, maintain confidentiality, and connect survivors with the support they need.
Appreciate WONCA’s support in bringing this work to the front line, as a key partner in my Special Initiative on VAWG.

As I walked with Kanamma, she randomly pointed to people, mostly women - her and her and her.
All kidney donors.
Forced to sell their kidneys to pay off loans, to protect family honour.
A neighbour or a relative always knew someone who could arrange it

Periodic reminder: NREGA is a gender issue. Among other things, it is a crucial safety net that prioritises women in the workforce.

As a modest tribute to Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, who is no more, we invite you to relive his historic move on NREGA in the Indian Parliament, in 2005.

In my meeting with Tajikistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Dilrabo Mansuri, we discussed joint efforts to implement health system reforms and improve access to health in 🇹🇯.
I welcomed 🇹🇯’s active role in regional initiatives such as the Health Investment Group and in shaping the new Central Asia Roadmap for Health & Well-being - CARM 2.0.
We also reviewed our partnership in other important areas, including
🔹reducing out-of-pocket spending on medicines
🔹backing health workforce incentive & retention policies
🔹tackling noncommunicable diseases & antimicrobial resistance
🔹strengthening preparedness for emergencies & climate-related risks.
WHO/Europe is proud to be a trusted partner for Tajikistan.

The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) plays an important role in strengthening primary health care (PHC) and advancing universal health coverage.
In my meeting with WONCA’s incoming President, Prof. Viviana Martinez-Bianchi, and President-Elect, Prof. Pilar Astier, I thanked the organization for its leadership in family medicine worldwide.
I emphasized that #PHC has a central place in the new European Programme of Work (#EPW2), where it will guide policies and actions across the European Region. We confirmed that we will keep working closely to strengthen PHC as the basis for better health in the Region.
I also welcomed @WoncaWorld leadership’s strong interest in my flagship initiative on violence against women & girls, and we agreed to working together on this critical issue.

The yellow taxi isn’t just a vehicle—it’s a livelihood, a symbol, whose history has been carried by generations of migrant drivers in Kolkata. As they are phased out for clean air and modern mobility, drivers say the transition is not just—it is exclusionary. In this photo essay @tanmoy_pj captures their everyday and emotions both. themigrationstory.com/post/as-kolkat…
