I’ve been thinking about farcon rome since getting back. it's farcaster's annual gathering, except farcaster doesn't run it. someone in the community puts their hand up every year, finds a venue, organizes the whole thing. we don't plan it or fund it. that's been true since the first one in boston in 2022, when maybe 40 people showed up, everyone left the venue together, and just found a restaurant. then LA, then new york, now rome, because the person who volunteered happens to be from rome. I've been to all of them and the thing that still gets me is that no one is obligated to be there. people come because they want to be around each other. a decade from now, in a world full of agents and ai-generated everything, I think events like these will be described as "made with love, by humans." didn't think I'd be forming core memories in rome. grateful to have been there.

GM Farcaster is an experiment in what new media looks like when it's built on top of a programmable, decentralized social network. We've built a technology stack surrounding the show, including: - a miniapp so people can be alerted when we go live, and can watch our show without leaving their social feed - an AI agent that lives as a Farcaster user, who can answer questions using its access to all our past shows - a lore archive, a scannable and public archive of every cast featured on our show - an admin dashboard with various internal tools, including the post show production of generating transcripts and adding shows to our website and miniapp, and preshow curation and prep Is there any interest in a behind-the-scenes peek into the infrastructure we've built? We could host a live stream with Q&A to demo all the admin tools that we're using to run the show.

the least interesting version of an ai social network is a bunch of agents posting at each other while humans watch the slop scroll by. moltbook tried this but it turned out that the agents were humans pretending to be agents all along. which is probably the correct internet ending. the more interesting version is ai helping people find their way into a network they just joined. the feed is opaque, the culture has inside jokes you don't know yet, and you have no idea where you'd fit. an agent that knows what you care about can surface the one conversation worth jumping into, rather than ten accounts to follow so the feed looks full. every social network has the cold start problem. most solve it by importing your contacts or showing you what already works for everyone else. that does not create a reason for you to stay. ai should make it easier for people to find the right humans, not give humans more fake people to follow.

Builders Day at /⁠farcon-rome is in the books! Opening session from @limone_eth set the tone: Everyone here is a builder! Opening sessions with @grin_io on building snaps and @saltorious1 on building ai agents got us started, then builders in the room got building for the snapathon.
