Went long some FP Newspapers $FP.V this week. $5m market cap for a 49% interest in a paper that does $5-$6m EBITDA a year, loan pretty much paid down from their mistaken equipment purchase, owns their own real estate that could be worth low $20m. With cash used to pay down debt the past few years, it should start piling up if they don’t do some type of shareholder return.

People say the value of $LNF's RE is worth around $1bn. So much more weight vs market cap compared to Loblaws or Canadian Tire's RE. My issue is that - for the common shareholder - the REIT IPO does nothing UNLESS management is intent on actually selling the REIT shares to issue dividends or conduct buybacks for $LNF. Otherwise, its just the same thing as before, except now they can show the market what the RE is worth- but the RE value will still be trapped in the company.

Struggling to rationalize this one. $LNF With Loblaws, as well as Canadian Tire - shareholders of the parents do not receive stock of the REIT- the parent retains control. So the value is not unlocked as is the case with a conventional spinoff. It just puts a market value on the REIT. But the 'value' is still in control of the parent so $LNF would have to sell some of its stake in the REIT and then buyback stock or issue a divvy for shareholders to ultimately benefit. Go look at Loblaws and Canadian Tire. The returns came on the announcement of a REIT spinoff, but not really afterwards.
