Washington DC in a nutshell. One of the architects of the biggest foreign policy failure in modern American history is still around 20 years later giving lectures on foreign policy “success” to others.
David Frum@davidfrum

I often think the Biden foreign policy would produce more success if its architects were less clever. "Give the Ukrainians/Israelis enough that they don't lose, but not enough to win" is an idea to baffle all lesser minds.

I’ll never vote for Trump. And I’m still all in for Biden. But all of us in this uneasy Biden coalition - from lefty to NeverTrumper - have a red line. And if Biden keeps separating from Israel, he’ll cross my red line. I hope he doesn’t. Watch here.👇 m.youtube.com/watch?v=jSJyeu…

@radjanirad Not luck, science. People interested in seeing and photographing aurora follow accounts that watch data from solar activity and post helpful information like this. It’s actually far more accurate than monitoring volcanoes giving you an increased chance of seeing moving lava.

I've come to realize that northern lights, like active lava, sightings are a game of luck and chance. We were lucky to catch this single glimpse in the 70 hours we spent in polar night! From Svalbard on Sunday Jan 7 at 5 pm. Samsung galaxy S22, no special modes y'all...

I’ve never read Newton, so this certainly could be way off. But when I see sentences like “Atheism is so senseless and odious to mankind that it never had many professors,” followed by a bad argument against atheism, my suspicious antennae go up.
Physics In History@PhysInHistory

Sir Isaac Newton's argument against atheism ✍️ Atheism is so senseless & odious to mankind that it never had many professors. Can it be by accident that all birds beasts & men have their right side & left side alike shaped (except in their bowels) & just two eyes & no more on either side the face & just two ears on either side the head & a nose with two holes & no more between the eyes & one mouth under the nose & either two fore leggs or two wings or two arms on the sholders & two leggs on the hipps one on either side & no more? Whence arises this uniformity in all their outward shapes but from the counsel & contrivance of an Author? Whence is it that the eyes of all sorts of living creatures are transparent to the very bottom & the only transparent members in the body, having on the outside an hard transparent skin, & within transparent juyces with a crystalline Lens in the middle & a pupil before the Lens all of them so truly shaped & fitted for vision, that no Artist can mend them? Did blind chance know that there was light & what was its refraction & fit the eys of all creatures after the most curious manner to make use of it? These & such like considerations always have & ever will prevail with man kind to believe that there is a being who made all things & has all things in his power & who is therfore to be feared. -- as mentioned in "A short Schem of the true Religion" 📷 a copy of Newton's painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1689)

@juliettekayyem Hi from the world’s windiest city, Wellington. We never have to power down our electrical wires. Is there a design flaw in the US? I see power lines being blamed in California fires occasionally too.

In Maui, a first narrative -- massive fire caused by Dora's winds -- glosses over causation. This wasn't arson or an errant cigarette. If the fire started by electrical wires that weren't powered down in anticipation of the wind, then it is human error and correctable. #failsafer
Juliette Kayyem@juliettekayyem

We create narratives about disasters that make them seem unmanageable or random or just a fluke or the nature of life. It is so often not true. Yes, mitigate climate change, but also learn from past disasters (CA required power down plans) to do better, fail safer.

As we await charges in Fulton County -- likely w/in days -- @cnn reports that the incursion into computers in Coffee County GA was a top down move from high in the campaign, probably Giuliani/Powell level. Multiple crimes there and ham-handed conduct reminiscent of Watergate. Looking forward to discussing on @CNN newsroom w/@FWhitfield at 4 PM ET.

@axios I’ve had two EVs now. Both bought new, both have had major breakdowns requiring 8 & 6 months off the road. Early adopters pay more and get riskier products. The next wave are wisely cautious

@MichaelEMann I had a real life interaction with one last week. He tried sunspots, volcanoes, what happened to global cooling, medieval warm period, CO2 is good for plants etc. I shut down each one with evidence and he walked off in his cloud of ignorance. There’s no getting to these people.
