Post-mortem: atlassian.com/engineering/po…
An important lesson here is related to peer [code] review.
It’s not enough to review the code. You must also consider the pieces and context surrounding the change.
In this case, the script’s input data — IDs to delete — wasn’t reviewed.

English

Scripts against production are dangerous.
There was a rule at AWS, paraphrased: before an operator runs a script against production, a second engineer must review it first, and be present during execution.
This rule didn’t always exist:

Update on cloud outage impacting ~400 customers. As part of scheduled maintenance our team ran a script to delete legacy data from a deprecated service. Instead of deleting the data the script erroneously deleted sites, and connected products, users, and 3rd party apps. (1/5)

@markimbriaco Thanks @markimbriaco and others for your perspective on the ops aspects here. That said, the incident and the response time are not up to our standards & we can and will do better. Agreed the comms should be better - please keep an eye on twitter.com/Atlassian/stat… as we update.

@curtiseinsmann Hi all - @goldsmithsteve here from Atlassian. Thanks for all the thoughtful comments here. We have a detailed Post Incident Review process underway & will be sharing more about how these controls work in our infra & how we've updated them based on learnings from this experience.

@fnthawar this is such a mid-90s Ontario haircut dude. I think both me and @goldsmithsteve had the same thing.
English

@fnthawar @googlecalendar @mustafa01ali i do a combination of two things:
* start some meetings late (scheduled for 5-10 min after the hour)
* use the same code all day, and when next meeting starts, use it as a way to introduce / reconnect people who usually don't see each other.
English

I need 5-10min between meetings, but @googlecalendar "Speedy Meetings" has a 🐛
Humans have a hard time ending a meeting early — 0 of my speedy meetings actually ended early
@mustafa01ali had the genius suggestion of starting meetings later instead
Problem solved 👊🏽

@heyitskagen @AskAtlassian You've inspired us to up our breakup game Kagen - thanks. Trying a better message out tomorrow.
(And sorry we have to break up. It's not you, it's us, and upbeat marketing notwithstanding, this is no fun on our end either :( )
