@cblatts @yuenyuenang @kopalo I share the same focus on those intractable problems. And it’s great to have work like yours that help us engage them! That’s what PDIA is meant to help with too!

I wasn’t intending to criticize adaptive/complex approaches. I actually teach a class on it because I wanted to learn more. For small to medium-big policy problems the social sciences offer a lot of work and insight. As soon as one jumps up to explaining growth and development trajectories it just feels much harder to make progress, bedeviled by difficulty of falsifiability. These were the big questions that got me into development in the first place and I wish I knew how to push those frontiers ahead.

@cblatts @yuenyuenang @kopalo I’m also serious about anyone wanting to get experience doing PDIA. It’s the only way to really engage. I think there are huge limits to just observing complexity. Come play with the PDIA teams!!!! You’ll love it! Hope all well Chris!

@cblatts @yuenyuenang @kopalo I get it! there is lots of theory on engaging complex challenges tho (not just explaining them) + much is embedded in PDIA, which has been applied to micro + macro problems (with some best cases on growth). Being practical (which we emphasize) doesn’t mean being a-theoretical.

@_alice_evans It amazes me how little attention is paid to the real implementation and impact of formal regulations ; and to the iceberg of factors that truly inform institutional contexts. Not surprising tho; it’s simply easier to program the delivery of a new law than to tackle norms etc
