@footalyse @HarryBarnes That’s hindsight analysis though. Sure, with the benefit of what we know now, he was the wrong choice. But literally every option had risk. The outcry over not signing anyone and then having Havertz out for half the season would have been massive.

@gr33nzo @HarryBarnes Signing no striker is better than throwing 65m on someone who isn’t good enough.

@footalyse @HarryBarnes Who was the "really good striker" though? Isak is very expensive injury prone Watkins is older and just okay Šeško is struggling so far Ekitike is great, but had lots of red flags in his history (injuries, physically, etc.)

@gr33nzo @HarryBarnes I genuinely don’t believe he’s as good as any of those strikers mentioned. Had Berta actually signed a really good striker that surely would have been worth several extra points. I think the consequences of that deal can’t be understated.

@footalyse @HarryBarnes I think he's absolutely a tier 2 striker. Looking at ~60m strikers, you have Ekitike (10), Pedro (10), and Mbuemo (9) who scored more. The rest are doing worse: Woltemade, Sesko, Larsen, Solanke, Wissa... He's not great, but he's not terrible nor is he the main problem.

@gr33nzo @HarryBarnes I think it’s a reach to categorise him in that tier. That’s where I’d have a player like Joao Pedro and Gyokeres doesn’t even sit at that table..

@footalyse @HarryBarnes We know our attacking players have delivered in the past and it can't be coincidence that basically none of them are delivering at the level they should. So for me it's a combination of coaching and nerves, not any one specific individual.

@footalyse @HarryBarnes Gyokores is a tier 2 striker, as his transfer fee suggests. 60m doesn't get you elite talent these days anymore. We hoped that he'd be the missing piece of our attacking puzzle, but he's a limited player and our overall attacking approach is bang average.

@footalyse I think the closer we get to the finish line, the more pressure the players are feeling. Every action seemingly feels like do or die, and you can’t perform at a high level when you approach games this way.

@gr33nzo It’s an unbalanced forward line that we’ve seen struggle against Bournemouth, Forest and Chelsea. How can they convincingly beat Leeds in a hostile atmosphere two weeks ago but choke at Wolves? That’s not logical.

@footalyse Every transfer carries risk, and no club gets it right with every player every time. Gyokores is not as good as we hoped, neither is Eze, but Zubi, Mosquera, Hincapie, and Norgaard have been very good imo. I wouldn’t write him off on the back of one window.

Allowing Berta to exert more influence over transfers is a sure fire way to see the club regress back to the state Arteta found it in. For Gyokeres alone, he should be limited to negotiating deals and nothing more.

@footalyse I think for 55m player he’s been ok, not great but also not total garbage. The elite striker that would warrant higher expectations would likely command a higher fee as well - likely 100m or more. Or getting lucky with more of an unknown - which we weren’t willing to do.

I think it was reasonable to have high expectations. Jesus and Merino can get you 15 goad a season in all comps. Havertz even more. So logically if we’re adding to that it should be an elite goalscorer or someone with the potential to be. Gyokeres is just another body with huge wages.

@footalyse We’ve been crying out for an elite goal scorer for so long that I think expectations were too high for anyone unless it was another Haaland. If Gyokores finishes with 15+ goals in all comps in his first season, which is totally achievable, would he be a complete failure?

We can brush it off today because we won convincingly but the reality remains the same. He’s nowhere near the level we need and a couple of scruffy finishes don’t change that. The manager and coaching staff can help him to make marginal improvements in the meantime but we really should be looking at cutting our losses in the summer given he’s in the higher wage bracket too.

@LeGrove Almost every PL winner is defined by a cheat code attacker (Salah, Agüero, Haaland, etc.) Saka has the profile to be in that conversation, but he’s not there yet. The rest of the attack is only a solid 7/10 at best and that may just cost us another shot at the title.

Real Madrid monitoring Martinelli for a summer move. Gyokeres Gerd Muller award winner last season. Bukayo, on an open market, would have every elite club vying for his signature. Madrid tried to sign Kai Havertz before us. All of them are underperforming or not playing right now... and we're still top of the league.

@arse2mouse The alchemy required to win top trophies is fascinating to me. You can do everything right on paper, spend substantial amounts of money, and still fail to win trophies. What a mad game we follow and love.

Feel pretty depressed and not just because a burst pipe means the whole family is living in a hotel. If Arsenal fall (at this rate not even at the final hurdle) then I think it’ll be hard to argue the project failed. Not entirely, we’ll still be a quantum shift from where we were

@_toxicblonde As a married guy with a kid, I don't have any recent female friends because I rarely find myself in situations where you would meet a female solo and then ask to hang out 1:1...outside of maybe colleagues who became friends. I mostly make friends with other couples these days.

“Men shouldn’t have female friends” is the most asinine take ever. I want men to have platonic female friends. If a man can only have male friends their entire world view is shaped primarily by men and men’s experiences. I can easily tell when a man has had strong female influences in their lives versus not. Saying men shouldn’t interact with women but then complaining about men not understanding women, women’s views, etc… yall see the issue?

Not going to happen, because Merino isn't a DM, and I don't think we'd rotate as much in defence with inexperienced players out of position. But I'd support it. For me Carabao have always been about youth and squad players in need of match fitness. You're allowed to disagree 😄

You have to just salute how good Haaland is. He's a freak athlete in a league full of them. Quite something to look like a bully in the Premier League. Haaland has 13 EPL goals, the next highest scorer at the club has 1 goal. Would be newsworthy if it were Arsenal.
