Con una autonomía de 25 días de operación y capacidad para albergar a 35 personas —entre personal médico, asistencial y tripulación—, esta embarcación, construida por @Cotecmar, brindará atención en salud a comunidades de los departamentos de Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Cauca y Nariño, beneficiando a cerca de 150 mil personas. ¡Más tecnología e innovación al servicio de los colombianos!

Colombia fortalece su soberanía: nuevos buques construidos por talento nacional refuerzan defensa, salud y presencia estatal. Forjados con manos colombianas en los astilleros de @Cotecmar, la Patrullera Oceánica ARC “24 de Julio” y el Buque Hospital CAPS-Costero Fluvial “Benkos Biohó” fueron entregados oficialmente a nuestras @ArmadaColombia. Un orgullo que navega con sello nacional, visión estratégica y vocación de servicio. Estos buques no son solo estructuras navales: son soluciones reales para fortalecer la soberanía, llevar salud donde antes no llegaba y ampliar el poder disuasivo frente a amenazas transnacionales. A fascinating paper published in @Nature just two days ago offers a new perspective on sleep drive—through the lens of mitochondria. This paper shows how waking and sleeping oppositely change mitochondrial fusion and fission dynamics; how artificially manipulating fusion and fission alters sleep drive; and how sleep centers of the brain may be programmed to be especially sensitive to changes in energy metabolism that occur during sleep/wake cycles. Turns out, the “powerhouses of the cell” might double as our biological alarm clocks. From an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense. As the paper notes: “Power-hungry nervous systems appeared—and with them, apparently, the need for sleep. Although sleep is likely to have since acquired additional functions… sleep serves an ancient metabolic purpose...” It’s not a light read—but then again, you shouldn’t be staring at bright lights before bed anyway. cc @hubermanlab @NTFabiano @ChrisPalmerMD

One of the lesser-appreciated aspects of type 1 diabetes is that it can follow the same pathway of type 2 diabetes and develop progressively worse insulin resistance. As described in this new manuscript (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/17…), the features that drive insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes, such as elevated insulin and weight gain (i.e., fat cell hypertrophy), also drive insulin resistance in people with type 1 diabetes. Of course, the hyperinsulinemia that promotes insulin resistance is coming from the syringe in the case of T1DM. This is one reason why the advice to "eat whatever you want and cover it with insulin" is so damaging. Better advice would be: avoid the carbs that force you to inject a lot of insulin.

Florida's citrus industry has collapsed from 244 million boxes of oranges in 1997-98 to just 12 million projected for 2024-25—a devastating 95% decline driven by citrus greening disease. This catastrophe resulted from decades of industrial farming that abandoned soil-building practices for chemical-intensive methods, creating weakened trees vulnerable to disease. As Brazil's citrus industry now follows the same path with 44% of trees already infected, Florida's empty groves serve as both a warning about industrial agriculture's risks and proof that regenerative farming can still restore even severely degraded systems.
