@TACJ I take your point, but my understanding is that a lot of the costs in the UK are due to planning and regulations rather than the building techniques used. If that is the case then we may not be able to save as much as hoped without addressing those issues.

Interesting to see people criticising this on the basis that the in the UK it is “more expensive” to build infrastructure, as if that’s a fundamental law of physics, rather than something we can change.

One of my great Peter Hitchens moments while at Oxford came when I was having a coffee outside the Missing Bean on Turl Street, opposite my college (Lincoln). Hitchens came past on his bike and gave me the most patrician stare down the end of his nose. A real privilege.

@AllieRenison @sophgaston Well, not quite. Canada got a cut price €10m entry fee whereas Britain was asked to fork out €2bn. Which all makes perfect sense if your main aim is to protect the French arms industry by sabotaging a deal w/ Britain.

Our indispensable security partner is becoming more unpredictable, but the EU (led by France) won’t open the door to viable defence cooperation. No easy options for Britain, but Europe loses too.

Without claiming that any of this is perfect architecture, it looks (at a first glance) so much better than the average for the last eighty years that it does feel hopeful. London could lead the world with work like this, if it so chooses.
