It’s disappointing that @Colgate bricks its own toothbrushing app. We got this message that the app will be retired in December, but there is no way to bypass the message on two phones. A toddler is tearful tonight about not being able to make any more progress earning “stars”.

I would ban books from having end notes, because I’m incapable of not turning to the back to see what they are, and then they turn out to be something incredibly obvious like an explanation of what the House of Commons is, and then I’ve forgotten what’s happening in the story.

@SpringApricity For sure , but also, priorities matter. And US washing machines are not unreasonably large given how important they are.

We should move beyond the AC and Europe debate and onto how unfeasibly small Fridges and Washing machines are in Europe. I love so much about Europe but some things just seem oddly mean spirited

@SpringApricity @TACJ That is, I believe, the point. The planning system can (and should) be changed but we like to pretend it was passed down to Moses on a stone tablet.

Interesting to see people criticising this on the basis that the in the UK it is “more expensive” to build infrastructure, as if that’s a fundamental law of physics, rather than something we can change.

I’ve unveiled a secret project today. One that we’ve been working on for the past year. Something that can add a billion pounds a year to the economy of the north while making the environment better. And we think we can deliver it at no cost to government. Ambitious, right?

My analog productivity system laid bare :) I enjoy bean counting more than I expected, I added that recently. One bean per completed deck.

@AvaEvaThornton I thought this was how it worked in the UK.... I remember hearing the factoid that water from the Thames is drunk 7 times on average before it gets to the sea

When I was in school, I distinctly remember being taught that sewage water was, as standard practice, filtered and recycled back into the drinking water supply, even though as far as I can tell, this isn't actually done at all in the UK?
AphroditeMaybeBaby@unexplainables8

do europeans / ppl in other countries think it’s like crazy that some americans drink tap water that is basically recycled sewage water in some places?

my first read was "tacky af" but actually, stuff is so cheap now. so so so cheap. one of the reasons boomers and gen x shoves Stuff at their grandkids is that Stuff used to be very expensive and significantly more scarce, or they were raised to view it that way but stuff is SO CHEAP now that it is significantly more polite to make it easy and prosocial for people to give you Stuff that you actually want (and rule out Stuff that you don't want). the primary problem modern parents have wrt Stuff is managing the incoming stream. the accumulation of Slop Stuff from little events, senile but beloved great grandparents, etc etc can get ridiculous! registries *feel* like A Bit Much, too, because in the past they were reserved for rare events with stakes, but with online shopping, registries are also Extremely Cheap to create and share. absolutely trivial. so depending on how you were raised and what your social circle is like, a registry for a 1yo feels like an absurd extravagance, but it's literally fifteen minutes on your phone if you want it to be. I think a good intermediate norm, if "registry" feels too hoity-toity, is to include a category on the invitation: "your presence is the only gift you need to bring; if you would still like to get something, craft supplies, more duplos, and experiences are always appreciated!" ofc if you have relatives who will bring junk regardless unless you have Very Very Very explicit instructions, you may just need a registry.... my other tip is, if you have relatives who persistently send things you hate (I have a relative who sends the worst kid-slop board books, for ex), you should be ruthless about trashing them. goodwill shoppers don't want your temu junk either! landfills aren't actually That Bad for the environment, it's okay! for the aforementioned relative, I take a cute picture of the item next to the baby and then bin it. the item is a prop for "I love you too aunt so and so" it's not a moral obligation or a chore.

is it tacky to include a gift registry for a first birthday party? i’d rather not have gifts at all if it means people are bringing toys that we just have to throw away because they don’t align with the way we’re raising baby

What does one buy for a 65 year old man who is completely uninterested in anything new, wears his clothes until they fall apart, already owns more books than he can read in a lifetime, and whose main hobby is sending his family links to Wikipedia articles? Asking for a dad.

@MrsCMFrancis I think a gap of 3 months was about when I headed to the doctors and ended up getting diagnosed with PCOS. There's all sorts of minor causes for missed periods but worth getting it checked out, I'd say.

Soooooooo…for the ladies (of whom my audience is 70%) so guys you can peace out now. My current cycle is sitting at 72 days, so I’ve missed 2 periods. I am not pregnant. I don’t know for sure but my body has signaled it’s ovulated a few times (but obviously hasn’t). Nothing significant has changed, I’m feeling fine and healthy overall. I’m 37. When do I start worrying about this? (Spoiler alert: I am worried).

You have to learn to balance the signals that you are sending to send messages to people that you will be easy to be friends with, and counter-intuitively, this will mean toning down a few notches so that other people don't feel like they need to match you at your level.

Being overly sweet, polite, and friendly often signals that you will be sensitive and over committal. The signal you are sending without realizing it is that it will require a lot of emotional investment because relationships are reciprocal and most people don't want to match it.

The autistic experience of constantly being told "you're such a sweet, lovely, polite girl!!" but nobody wants to be your best friend. Nobody jokes with you. Nobody enthusiastically invites you. You're used as a two dimensional placeholder friend rather than loved.

@PeterRFB I lived with my grandmother for 6 months when I was 22. Very different from moving back in with parents. My grandmother saw me as an adult on equal terms.
