This is the work that can’t be replicated by AI or pursued by a reporter with a Substack. It requires time - during which a reporter isn’t producing a lot of copy. Building trust with sources so you can tell sensitive stories, that’s a process that doesn’t scale.
Jose Antonio Vargas@joseiswriting

"Nearly five years." Investigative journalism takes years and years. The investment is immense, and always worth it, and, in the era of "hot takes" and ephemeral "content," rigorously reported journalistic work is needed more than ever. We must keep supporting investigative journalism. From @mannyNYT, lead reporter of the blockbuster piece on Cesar Chavez ⤵️

Earlier today, two Israeli strikes hit Nasser hospital in Gaza, killing at least 20 people. Jerome Grimaud, our emergency coordinator in Gaza, shares his reaction: “We denounce in the strongest possible terms Israel’s horrendous attacks on the Nasser medical complex today – the only partially functioning public hospital in the south of Gaza. Israeli forces killed at least 20 people and injured 50 more in consecutive strikes, including healthcare workers, rescuers, and journalists. “Among them was Mariam Abu Dagga, a freelance photographer who frequently worked with MSF. We are heartbroken by her death. Mariam leaves behind a son who must now grow up without his mother. At least four other journalists were also killed today. “Some MSF staff members were forced to shelter in the laboratory as Israel repeatedly struck the building amidst rescue efforts. We are outraged as the Israeli forces continue to attack healthcare workers and journalists with impunity. “For the past 22 months, we have watched as healthcare facilities have been levelled, journalists silenced, and healthcare workers buried beneath the rubble by the Israeli forces. As Israel continues to shun international law, the only witnesses of their genocidal campaign are deliberately being targeted. It must stop now.”

Mariam Dagga, killed by Israel today, was an incredibly talented photographer. She relentlessly and courageously documented the genocide. I'm going to share some of her images. Graphic content included.

I can’t in good conscience continue to work for Reuters given their betrayal of journalists in Gaza and culpability in the assassination of 245 our colleagues.

The best, most heroic, and bravest of us. Never stopped reporting even when Israel killed his father and many colleagues, including his close friends Ismail Alghoul and Hossam Shbat. Anas Alsharif. Murdered by Israel tonight in Gaza City. The genocidal regime must be stopped.

What were you doing at 28? Were you writing a message to the world anticipating the end of your life? That’s what Anas Al Sharif was doing at 28, along with reporting the genocide of his people. Israel is openly claiming the attack knowing it won’t face consequences. ENOUGH.

Tonight, Israel murdered the bravest journalist of our generation, Anas Al Sharif. They promised they will murder him. They promised us his death. They threatened, and organized a campaign to prove he is targetable, and they succeeded, and now they're basking in their "successful operation." I swear on everything that just yesterday I was thinking of dear Anas. I thought if the pen can truly protect. If a platform can truly protect. I mean millions are looking to you for guidance , for news, for coverage on this horror, surely that platform can offer some protection no?
