Can we stop talking about "skills" and start talking about "experiences"? Life is not defined by skills. And, we are not merely the sum total of what we can do. Experiences are how we live our lives. Experiences are how our memories are structured. Experiences are how we make sense of ourselves and the world around us. Experiences are everything. Yet, as talent we often undervalue all we have learned. And, as companies we fail to see the value in analogous, non-work experiences. Why? Well, it is because we see experiences through a very narrow lens. We don't see how: 🏆 that time as a stay-at-home parent taught us how lead a team, manage schedules, and have empathy. 🏆 that time we traveled around Europe was a showcase of curiosity, adaptability, and honing our ability to stay in the moment. 🏆 that year-long effort to lose weight and get back in shape was all about resilience, complex problem solving, and sustained commitment to a cause. Our lens on skills is too narrow. Our experiences have taught us more than we realize. Don't shy away from sharing non-work experiences as part of your story. Life is the greatest classroom on earth. And, you are more prepared than you know. What non-work experiences most shaped you?

"To keep agility high and ensure talent can continue to be creative, the employee experience must be consistent—we must see how we work as the fuel for both productivity and commitment." From the book Wrong Fit, Right Fit by @gramico. itrev.io/3S23IL6

Check it out: Managers can be molded into the leader you need. ❗90% of managers feel unprepared for the future of work. ❗53% of managers are burnt out. ❗70% of our engagement is due to our manager. The hard truth is managers aren't being set up to be worldclass. But, you can help. 👉 Get clear about what you need from your manager to be at your best. 👉 Keep the list close by and refer to it often. 👉 If you manager does something from the list, give them them the feedback. 👉 Then, sit back and enjoy seeing them do it again and again. Remember... Your manager is exhausted (so they are often not at their best.) Your manager is unprepared (because no one prepared them.) Your manager wants to be great (they just need a little nudge.) You can make your manager. You can mold their behavior. You can create your own reality.

Interviews are like first dates. It is almost impossible to know if you want to make a commitment. Want to suss out the truth in a job interview? Well, Bryan Robinson and I had the opportunity to riff on some ideas via his most recent article for Forbes titled "5 Tips to Sniff Out The Truth About A Company Before The Interview." It is worth the read. Link here: forbes.com/sites/bryanrob… Have tips for interviewing? Share them in comments.

joyful is on to something big. Who is joyful? If you took the best creative agency out there and mashed it up with a top-notch events company and culture change consultancy, you would have joyful. Cool, right? We help culture-focused leaders and companies to: 👉 rediscover their "secret decoder ring" of success by uncovering the values and #waysofworking that make them unique. 👉 build an #employeexperience narrative that combines frameworks, offerings, and communications in to a single authentic and clear culture story. 👉 curate immersive gatherings and virtual interactions to #rerecruit your employees back to your company, your values, your purpose, and how you make money. 👉 activate a #culturetransformation roadmap that identifies the #momentsthatmatter and builds deep commitment and engagement over time. In the end, we make work more joyful. If you want our help, DM me on LinkedIn at Andre Martin or email me at andre@joyful.co. Oh, and check out the research below from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on the power of #joyatwork. It is pretty stellar.

Hot take: the top performers know the best place to work is the place that works for you. How do you find your best place? Check out the conversation with New Rules for Work. In the episode, we riffed on: 💡why the #futurofwork is heading down the wrong path by focusing on where we work versus how and why we work. 💡how to help #hrleaders to rediscover their company's "best way of working" to recruit and retain "right fit" talent. 💡how to help #jobseekers to find "right fit" by deeply reflecting on how they work and what they are solving for right now. Big thanks to Elise Keith and Dave Mastronardi for the stimulating conversation. @dptalia Love the sentiment in this message. Breaks my heart that you, an educator, aren't on top of the world. We need more of our best teaching the next generation. Wish the system allowed you to do your best work! Hang in there. You matter.

Hot take: What is the secret to a fulfilling career? It's not about finding the perfect company. It's not about landing the bigger paycheck. It's not about working at the coolest brand. It's not about the next promotion. It's about knowing the kind of career you are curating. It's about understanding the why behind your next move. It's about clarifying how the next job builds on the prior. It's about being clear that every yes comes with a no. Are you of company? Are you of craft? Are you of cause? Take this free assessment from the book and find out: lnkd.in/gBYQH-a3 #findyourdreamjob #wrongfitrightfit

Here's a secret high-performers know. Creative energy is always flowing. But, sometimes it is flowing to unproductive activities. In "wrong fit" situations, our creative juice goes to things like: 😡 managing negative emotions, 😷 creating protective narratives, 💩 muddling through low-value, low-meaning tasks, 🤕 or, coping with stress and burnout. Thus, We are left with very little energy for our craft, our life, or ourselves. This year, do something about it. Make a shift to your day-to-day or get out. Here are a few suggestions: 👉 Reassess what you need to be at your best. 👉 Surround yourself with people give you energy. 👉 Create a healthy relationship with time. 👉 Reconnect to purpose and to meaningful work. 👉 See the day (as hard as it is) as a chance to learn. If none of that works, find a place that is a "right fit." Where is your creative energy flowing right now? #wrongfitrightfit #findyourdreamjob
