Happy back to school! Thinking about what comes next? I am recruiting PhD students for Fall 2025 to join the Kasimatis lab at @uvabio @UVA! We study the genomics of sexual conflict & the evolution of reproductive traits. Please share widely. Details: conflictgenomics.com

Super happy for Amy's next steps. She is setting up to do some very revolutionary work that integrates epigenetics, natural variation, molecular biology, and evolution. Very, very lucky to have her in the lab these past few years!

I am very excited to announce I am starting my lab as an Assistant Professor @FloridaState this week! The lab will be focused on understanding the basis of individual variation in complex traits using a variety of genomic approaches and primarily using C. elegans as a model.

Nice story on the new research initiative on synthetic biology and aging that I'm helping to lead at the UO. Very exciting times ahead in this field, I think. oregonquarterly.uoregon.edu/researchers-de…

🚨 New preprint alert 🚨
We've generated a new gapless genome of Caenorhabditis brenneri🪱, one of the most diverse metazoans! We compared its genome and gene organizations with other nematodes with smaller population sizes. Check it out!

How many academic papers are written with the help of ChatGPT? To answer this question, we analyzed 14mln PubMed abstracts from 2010 to 2024 and looked for excess words:

My outstanding graduate student Rose Al-Saadi won the best student presentation award at the #AGE2024 meeting! @americanaging

@mbeisen Damn these things look similar. Non rhabdid pharyngeal bulb obviously 😜. But given your obsession, perhaps elegans counts a “brain worm” for some?
English

@PSarkies @Timothy0Leary Also depends on your definition of “unit.” Worm neurons are highly multifunctional, especially the chemosensory system. So there is hardly an isomorphism with computational networks.
English

C elegans has 302 neurons. Show me an artificial neural net with 302 units that can do everything a worm can.
Nat Friedman@natfriedman
Crows have about 1.5B neurons. Assuming each neuron connects to ~7k other neurons on average, that's roughly equivalent to 10T parameters in an artificial neural network. Is this a useful analogy?

Our latest, in Lab on a Chip. Super cool and super high tech — and super hard to get right. 10 years of work to figure out a way of automating high precision demography in C. elegans: The Egg Counter! pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…
