Some personal news. Next Wednesday will be my last day at The Salt Lake Tribune. It's been an honor and seeing the impact of the journalism has been a daily thrill. The work of The Tribune is critical for Utah and for the West and it was awesome to be a part of it.

A few years ago, I wanted Silicon Slopes to pay off every outstanding school lunch account in Utah. I was told it’s not possible because some parents might take advantage. “So what?” I replied. This heartbreaking story is about much more than that, but the part where he was eating food out of trash cans struck a chord. No child in Utah should be denied lunch due to an outstanding or nonexistent account balance. I’m not asking the government to fund it. Just let Utahns pay for it themselves. I’m confident enough money could be raised in 48 hours to solve this problem forever.

I've covered 20 years of paroxysms of public American violence. The search for meaning in the motives of the shooter is the worst part. It give us the impression that our violence problem is caused by whatever is most pressing in misfit's worldview and hands them a microphone.
