@MBTA There’s a piece above a door on GL train 3815B that is swaying and looks like it may fall. Currently at Haymarket going towards Heath.

@MBTA It has not. There are still no trains coming and there are hundreds of people piled up on the platform. If people have alternate routes they should take them.

When your public transit agency does something good, say so! Positive feedback has more influence than negative feedback, because it’s more rare and usually more thoughtful. An example from Boston of how it’s done.

This is happening during a Democratic presidency. Even if Harris is elected, the Supreme Court will continue to dismantle our rights until a mass movement is strong enough to stop them. Working class power will win reproductive freedom.

New: At least two women in Georgia died after they couldn't access legal abortions and timely medical care in their state, ProPublica has found. This is one of their stories. propub.li/3N7xPgN

@megadongs @mattyglesias Seems like if this was the point, trade with most of Europe, Japan, etc. would still be okay. Instead we have a situation where foreign buses and trains are unavailable but anyone can buy an imported car which is just one more nail in public transit’s coffin.

@mattyglesias Unfortunately it's true that if you pay people competitive American salaries and provide American-standard workplace safety, the products will be more expensive than if they're manufactured by virtual slaves in sweatshops overseas. We should walk our talk and pay extra for that.

@MBTA whatever just happened with GL 3856 at East Somerville, it was super weird, probably dangerous, and definitely not inspiring confidence in the riders.

@JEllulz @Forrest_Piano OK, but an old fart I worked with apparently ate 12 egg breakfasts on the regular, and thought that was normal. This isn't as absurd a situation as you think. Never underestimate the power of weirdos.

yea definitely generates unease. but at the same time, why didnt the founders just align the system to be conditional on popular vote? is the concept of detaching them prima facie nonsensical? they set the system up like this for SOME reason, and despite how uneasy it may feel when electoral college system grants presidency to one who loses popular vote, it probably was precisely to avoid domination by large states with a concentrated ideology that differs from the other states (i.e., the exact situation we are in now)

Literally everyone knows about the electoral college’s current pro-GOP tilt. I think people invoke the Founders only to intellectually feel comfortable about a system where a minority of voters regularly get their preference for the executive and judicial branches.
Lawrence McDonald@Convertbond

@TheStalwart A 1% lead in a popular vote poll is likely a landslide loss in the electoral college. She needs to be 6-8% ahead to make this a close race --over 60M people live in NY and CA. As you well know, these votes are meaningless in the EC. Madison, Jay and Hamilton wanted it that way.

@NaqiyNY I bet a lot of this is increasing handicap accessibility. The slowest part of my bus commute in SF (MUNI) was waiting for the glacially slow wheelchair lift almost every ride. (usually a homeless person using it for a shopping cart, but that's a separate issue...)

Bus speeds have declined for 7 of the top 10 US agencies in the past decade. Slower buses means agencies have to spend more to maintain service or reduce frequencies. We need a massive federal program to fund bus lanes, signal priority, & other tools to get our buses moving!
