Here’s a stupid question about structural causal equations: I still don’t get what they really are about. So you just write down an equation knowing that it’s not symmetric, so it’s not REALLY an equation? But then why bothering writing down an equation in the first place?

While they may seem arbitrary, it’s very important to respect the rules of the academic hierarchy. E.g. you’re only allowed to walk on the grass at King’s College, Cambridge, if you’re a Senior Member of the College OR if you think requiring a PhD to step on the grass is stupid.
