One of many issues in Indian policy thinking is everyone wants China like growth, but few actually attempt to understand Chinese policymaking, history, nor economic thought. Few read even translated Chinese texts, much less the originals. The left is stuck in the past, the right cant see past its own nose, the center is too narrowminded
Keji Mao (毛克疾)@kejimao

Many years ago, I gave two presentations on how China builds its industrial and technological ecosystem—one for an Indian audience and one for a Vietnamese audience. Although the content was largely the same and went into many details that were rarely mentioned in other settings, the feedback from the Vietnamese and Indian participants was strikingly different. When I discussed the gaps between Vietnam and China, my Vietnamese friends listened very attentively to my analysis of Vietnam’s weaknesses. They even proactively acknowledged Vietnam’s deficiencies and asked me to analyze more specific issues in greater detail. However, when I compared China and India, many Indian friends became quite argumentative. They tried to compete with or challenge the Chinese perspective on almost every point, to the point where I could barely develop my analysis. As a result, they might have won the debate, but missed a valuable opportunity to have a meaningful exchange. So, I came to know which country would be the real winner for "China+1" many years beforehand.

In Bushwick and Girls at the club are fawning over me like "it's so hot how evil you are" All I said was that Joe Biden passed some of the best legislation of the past 80 yrs and he gets no credit for it

@Noahpinion All the stuff till the Crusades is just Eastern Mediterranean infighting lol. Levantines and Greeks are closer to each other than either are to the Dutch or Saudis

Europe vs. the Mideast is the most epic, long-running Clash of Civilizations in world history. - Trojan War - Greece vs. Persia - Alexander - Rome vs. Parthians - Byzantines vs. Sassanids - Arab conquests - Crusades - Turkish conquests - WW1
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

There are only two real Clashes of Civilizations throughout history: 1) Europe vs. the Mideast, and 2) Central Asia vs. India. Cases where semipermeable geographic boundaries allow invaders to establish beachheads for centuries but not permanently.

@frontierindica Honestly a large unified market is a massive advantage. That's the primary strength that the US has compared to say Europe. Indian state needs to reform and improve and things could really rip

People just think that India has a low base and a lot of "pent up growth" so it can just keep growing at 6-7 per cent for the next 20-30 years even without any major reforms.
shanky shah@shankysanghi

@frontierindica I never understood an attraction of investing in India anyways. There is no significant product development going on in India. People would struggle to name single company in India, whose product sold worldwide. Most of the companies just runs on rent extraction.

In America-white collar America- East Asians and Brown guys hang out-Harold and Kumar style. In old Canada; pre-2008, if you had non-Punjabi friends they would likely be Chinese. Today, in Canada the brown man and the yellow man have gone their separate ways. Not often remarked on.

India’s manufacturing hubs are TINY compared to the megaliths of China and America. Ice cream startups are not the solution. De-regulate or die into irrelevance. (Podcast in thread).

@VinamreKasanaa But why are ice cream brands not a solution, if you become a global brand and dominate foreign markets? If cola companies can be behemoths, why can’t we have same in fmcg?

@edwardrow Brother everyone knew where that camera was, slowed down, then immediately went back to whatever speed they were at. Me knowing s camera is not there but a cop might be hiding somewhere along Parkside makes me more conscious of my speed tbh.

@JeremiahDJohns @zikakuto I think mass murder is bad; that’s one reason I’m sympathetic to the foreign policy interests of China—a country that, unlike us, hasn’t waged any foreign wars since 1979!

@buccocapital I highly doubt it. Not because it won't suck or doesn't already suck, but because everyone is getting dumber and lazier because incremental deliverables are "good enough," and we're starting to forget how to do hard deep work.

Bravo. As the rupee sinks past Rs 96 to the dollar and Brent crude has been flirting with $110 for much of this month, the government's genius macroeconomic response is to identify the one small escape hatch left for the aspirational middle class: foreign travel. It is not enough that this government has already imposed TCS of 5% on overseas tour packages of up to Rs 10 lakh and 20% beyond that. It is not enough that airline tickets already carry GST of 5% for economy and 18% for non-economy. It is not enough that international passengers already pay airport User Development Fees (UDF) on both arrival and departure. Apparently we need one more special cess/surcharge on foreign travel because middle class wagies must be compelled to enjoy Amrit Kaal by putting a gun to their heads. If you cannot be persuaded that Vishwaguru is paradise, your Bali, Dubai, Thailand, Europe trip will be fiscally disciplined until morale improves. Also, remember that Temporary taxes have a habit of becoming permanent once the state discovers people can be emotionally blackmailed into paying them. By 2027, IT selliyas will be explaining how this foreign travel cess is actually your sacred contribution to Bharat Mata, how your cess pales in comparison to soldiers' sacrifice on the border, how Hindu civilization will be in grave danger if you don't pay the cess on your boys' trip to Phuket.

It's true that they usually won't actually name any welfare programs that red state citizens shouldn't get. Many seem to want to keep giving out the money... *while* stigmatizing the red-staters as poor, dumb free-loaders.

There's a famous conservative tweet that goes something like "When I say liberals are bad, I mean I think you're dumb but would save you from a fire. When liberals say conservatives are bad they mean they should all die."
