California has some of the dumbest laws in the nation. My 12-yo son is a child. He’s growing up, but he is a child. Period It’s insane that - if dealing with a complex medical condition - parents have to ask their kids for permission to access. No one can convince me otherwise

@NickClairmont1 I started watching it last year because I remember the theme music being very comforting during my childhood… I loved watching it. Still found it extremely comforting.

Last summer a neighbor suggested a show I had never heard of, the 90s hit Northern Exposure. Once I started it, I was so enthralled I didn't stop until I had seen the whole thing multiple times and then flown to Alaska and written this long, weird piece. Which I hope you enjoy!

The sad thing is not that is a ridiculously stupid comment, but rather that so many people have come to believe it. Insurance WAS designed to mitigate unforeseen costs, not cover day to day expected and/or recurring costs. That would be like expecting each gas refill for you car to be covered because you have auto insurance.

Catastrophic insurance is actually what “insurance” is supposed to mean. Routine costs (doc visits, occasional urgent care, prescriptions, the sort of stuff that people predictably use) were paid in cash - and were cheaper because of it. INSURANCE was supposed to be for unpredictable costs, like getting cancer or hit by a bus. And catastrophic insurance was fantastic for that purpose without breaking the bank. “Insurance” for predictable, routine costs that most people incur is just called “paying overhead on top of expenses,” which is why most people carry accident insurance but not maintenance insurance on their cars. It wasn’t consumers who were stupid.

Most cults aren't like this, they are like the one next door to my parents, a "self-help" guru who delivers spiritual pablum over videoconference calls to thousands of suckers who give him money every week. They're also like the weirdos who run the Yellow Deli in a community south of me, who appear to be exemplary community members, but maintain control over members through psychological abuse and manipulation. Far more of those than the very obvious physically abusive cults.

I just finished writing a novel about cults last year. People like to say "anyone can get fooled into joining a cult," but the truth is your life has to be suffering a serious lack for you to be happy about the fact that you get to live on a desert compound where you get beaten on the daily and have to have sex with an ugly, bearded man thirty years older than you while reciting made up bullshit hymns. There are people in such pain all around us in ways many of us can hardly imagine.

Last night, after she’d gone to bed, my 16 y/o daughter receives a text from a friend. (We keep electronics in our room at night). I know my daughter isn’t gonna see it for a while and I know the answer to the girl’s dance-class-related question. So I just pick up the phone and answer it really quick as if I’m my daughter and leave it at that. Tonight, I see her giggling over her phone. I ask what’s up. Apparently, the other girl’s mother had just wanted to get an answer to the question really quick, so she picked up HER daughter’s phone and texted mine as if she were her daughter. (basically both of us were too lazy to go through the rigmarole of explaining, “hi, this is Mrs. So-and-so, and here’s why I’m texting you on your friend’s phone…” But the funny part was how the two girls figured this out. Because the first one was so appalled at seeing her mother‘s perfectly punctuated and capitalized sentences, that she felt she needed to come clean that it was her mom lest my daughter think she is that conscientious. And my daughter, likewise, didn’t want her friend to think that SHE uses correct grammar when texting either. So what I learned today is that it is apparently humiliating to be caught correctly formulating sentences via text.
