I have a lot of fun doing play-by-play, and 2025 was very enjoyable I was privileged to call another Stonehouse Cup final at the end of the PJHL season, as well as some JPHL action (including eventual 3rd overall WHL pick Liam Pue). Also some bonus UBC Baseball in the summer!

The Flyers don’t get enough credit for never changing their logo. Their logo is simple but sick, like the Red Wings logo

@ElliottWolfeJ MLB Team is a back up plan for the mayor because it seems like he knows the the Whitecaps are likely leaving

Is there something I’m missing? What’s the link between a potential Vancouver MLB team and the Whitecaps staying? It would be different ownership, different stadium. What should the city of Vancouver be doing to help the Whitecaps stay? Seems more like a Province/PavCo issue

@GregBalloch @LeightonGoebel Let’s say there was no delayed penalty called but Ottawa ends up going to score a goal on Carolina in the other end. Can Carolina then challenge that they themselves were offside previously and the play should have been blown dead?

If Carolina scored on their own net during the delayed penalty, it would have led to my favourite yet-to-happen hockey moment: An OT goal that doesn’t immediately end the game. By the rulebook, Carolina would still get a chance to shoot even if they scored on their own net.

WHAT A SEQUENCE IN RALEIGH AS WE HEAD TO A SECOND OVERTIME 🤯 The Hurricanes thought they had won in overtime, but the play was deemed offside. Jordan Martinook was awarded a penalty shot on the play, but failed to score.

@RiskyRL_1995 @LeightonGoebel I think it would work like offside possession. If the team has official possession and put the puck in their own net, that’s an own goal. Deflections, etc, don’t count.

@GregBalloch @LeightonGoebel I can see a weird scenario cause of that too. Like how exactly does the league define an own goal?

@LeightonGoebel Former ref Dave Jackson cleared that up: Apparently own goals cannot be challenged in any way! Puck over glass, hand pass, etc - it all becomes non-reviewable on an own goal.

@GregBalloch This made me think of another insane scenario - if a team pulls their goalie, enters the offensive zone offside, snd then score on themselves can they challenge the play for offside?

@CptKirk121 Apparently there is a fail safe in the rulebook that says only one goal can count per stoppage

@GregBalloch Wait, that's crazy! Only if the penalty results in a penalty shot? Or they play up to 2min of 5 on 4 to see if they score to tie?

@nklym143 Could be 2 infractions against the same team. Would be a wild play for that to occur, but this whole theory kinda is 😂

@GregBalloch Also can't happen since possession of the puck is necessary to earn a penalty shot. The play would be whistled dead the moment the other team took posession.

Thank you Dave for clarifying (even if it ruins the fun) Now I want to see simultaneous penalty shot calls, with the second penalty shot hinging on the result of the first
Dave Jackson@ESPNRefNHL

@GregBalloch A team scoring on their own net would end the game, Greg. Everything else would be negated. I don't have the rule number but it specifically states 'THAT ONLY ONE GOAL CAN BE SCORED ON ANY STOPPAGE' Game Over!

@TyManHawksFan @FriedgeHNIC @sportsnetkyle Apparently there is a trump card in the rulebook that states only one goal can be scored at a time. Once the first goal counts, everything gets wiped, even if the original infraction was heinous.

@ESPNRefNHL Could Carolina have challenged for offside (on themselves) if they scored on their own net in this scenario?

@kevinyoung90 Offside review doesn’t need to happen in this scenario, just Carolina scoring on themselves during the delayed call

@GregBalloch Well, it depends. Since the puck exits the zone, the offside challenge can’t occur. Would the referees have the balls to still call it a penalty shot in that instance?

@ceblam_ No, it only works with a penalty shot. If it's a regular penalty the game would end.
