During WWII, the Canadian government forcibly removed over 22,000 Japanese Canadians—most being citizens—from British Columbia, interned them in interior camps, and sold their confiscated property
. Using the War Measures Act, this systemic, race-based detention from 1942–1949 resulted in destroyed livelihoods, split families, and forced, meagre, post-war relocation

What followed was the most egregious and unconstitutional violation of rights and freedoms by their own government that Canadian citizens have ever experienced.
