3/ There as usual was not even a hint in the release announcement that these new #Linux #kernel releases were fixing any vulnerabilities, just the standard "All users of the […] series must upgrade." advice.
If that's news to you, you might want to read kroah.com/log/blog/2018/…

In which I write a teeny-tiny bit of Go code to make the bash scripts I use for kernel maintenance work a small bit prettier...

Gum 0.7.0 is out! Now, you can align spinners on either side of your title with the newly introduced --align flag, thanks to @gregkh! github.com/charmbracelet/…
English

@techdadteddy It's still being published? That book is anything but "fresh", it's quite dated by now :)

I think I just stumbled across @gregkh using gum in his kernel scripts 😊
Not gonna lie, I'm a little bit proud of it.

Reminder for #Linux developers:
Use a "Cc: stable@..." tag in changes you want to see backported to stable and longterm #kernel series, as a "Fixes" tag is not enough (but nevertheless might do the trick).
For details see this #lkml msg from @gregkh: @kroah.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">lore.kernel.org/lkml/YwZmu1ZTb…

@spacenick88 @fagiolinux @fatherlinux @cfkschaller It's as if no one has noticed that Android kernels have a stable internal ABI for drivers, _AND_ still take all upstream LTS releases for the past few years.
Stable abi is not valid excuse to not take all upstream updates.
{sigh}
English

@fagiolinux @fatherlinux @cfkschaller @gregkh And that's why it's a spicy question, the stable kernel internal ABI has costs and benefits. In my opinion some costs/benefits matter only depending on the development model, politics and opinions less on technical issues.

As it's a rainy Sunday in lots of Europe today, why not fill out a developer survey to pass the time:
research.net/r/VLP8RST
Yes, I know you all get at least one request a week for this, but hey, what's one more, and this one is sponsored by a lot of good .eu groups.
English

@Kausalitaet @spendergrsec @kees_cook Then perhaps switch distros? Lots of other ones keep up with the stable releases quite well.
Upstream has loads of automated regression testing, why do you think we do not?
English

@gregkh @spendergrsec @kees_cook Not even the Ubuntu Kernel team achieves that, you know? They are lagging in backporting. And upstream is lagging in automated regression testing, especially performance related. I'm just one guy trying to do upgrades and just ask for some help. Guess I won't get it. My bad 😔
English

@Kausalitaet @spendergrsec @kees_cook If I'm technically correct, then just update each week to the latest stable release and all will be fine, no need to worry about mislabeling anything.
English

@spendergrsec @kees_cook @gregkh And yes, Greg, I have seen all your talks on Linux security and that we must update and You are technically correct (the best kind of correct), but this all doesn't help in real life, as you know. Please at least label stuff you know about as security relevant, thanks.

This box showed up today! Need to "borrow" a monitor from my son's system and get it set up this weekend!
