Being a firefighter wasn’t something he did. It’s who he is. Gates served 27 years with the Fulton County Fire Service and became the first Black Battalion Chief in the city. When he joined, there weren’t any Black firefighters. He faced challenges and discrimination head-on, but he never let that define him. “If you can do that job, I can do that job well, too,” he said. At 91, he is the oldest retired Fulton County Firefighter. Every day, his work was about people: saving lives, protecting property, and showing up for the community. “I always just believed we should treat each other how we want to be treated. That’s what I do and that’s what we did in the fire service.” His dedication and leadership helped transform the department and paved the way for future generations of firefighters. i was SA’d when i was 20 years old. i went to the hospital to do a rape kit and the doctor (who was a white man) asked me how i let this happen. once the doctor completed the rape kit and left the room, i sat up and started crying. the nurse wrapped me in a hug and let me cry on her shoulder. when i went to report him to his superior (he was in the military), they told me it wasn’t worth it. the man told me that he would receive a slap on the wrist and i would humiliate myself if i made it public. I decided to walk away and pretend it never happened. the bite marks took weeks to go away. there isn’t a day that goes by that i wish i would have done more. the Epstein survivors are some of the bravest people I have ever seen.
