@waynenilsen Yup! 35” with outside tires removed. I’ve had a 2013 ford raptor so using that for now. 8k towing capacity so still a little wiggle room. This machine is 3820lbs

@billy_zayy Yea definitely try to rent the largest hp machine you can. I would highly suggest renting before buying just so you don’t have such a huge up front capital commitment and then have to figure out how to sell if demand isn’t quite there or you’re learning.

@grinditstumps Nice! In hindsight, what do you think best path is for aspiring stump grinding owner operator? Rent the highest hp machine you can find? Then go big and buy? Thinking bandit 2550 or lower hp calrton sp5014. Thoughts on machines to rent then buy? I see so many opinions out there

1 month in to grinding and going all in. Driving 10 hours to get a machine and spending close to what I paid for both of my vehicles 💀 Sometimes you have to bet on yourself - go big or go home 💪

Just got my first cold call from someone who was referred to me from a past client. Feels good! Started this trying to emulate @StumpGuyTy but 95%+ of work has been retail. Still trying to crack my first few regular tree sub jobs and hope that that’ll explode my revenue 📈

@grinditstumps @StumpGuyTy Congrats & good luck. How many tree companies have you contacted to try & generate sub jobs for? Did you use outscraper to create a list and contact based on that?

@lightningstumps I’ve lost at least 5 customers my first month cause they said someone came and just did it for them. Clearly 0 cares about calling 811. If I get to the customer first I usually explain 811 and if someone doesn’t call they may not even be insured and it’s legally required.

Always do your locates! It’s the biggest risk with stump grinding. The gas utility couldn’t make it much clearer, they don’t want me grinding this stump.

We’ve officially launched. First day on the job: subcontracted to do 6 stumps for $1,400. Two neighbours hired us for 5 more “while we were there”. Total was $2,400. The stump in the picture was my first ever. What a start!

@lightningstumps @AndrewRSeeley1 Yea I landed one sub job for someone with a 25-30ish hp grinder. I have gotten a few responses that they have their own but when I get a larger machine I’ll start following those up with the machine size I have and then include it going forward.

@grinditstumps @AndrewRSeeley1 What responses have you been getting? Or no response at all? I heard plenty of “we have a grinder” but discovered that most of those had a small 25-35HP grinder. There was a clear need in my area for a big grinder.
