@sophiegrenham @JaniceScully1 … or a croissant au beurre from Paris.🙂
Français

@JaniceScully1 The best pain au chocolat is €1.40 from SuperValu. If you can get in just when they're laid out, you're onto a winner.

I just paid €4.80, like a proper fool, for an almond croissant from The Art of Coffee, a perfectly pleasant but fairly run of the mill café chain where their pain au chocolat is, more often than not, stale.
Now, this croissant is large and stuffed with filling, but nearly a fiver for a pastry is simply too much. Yet this is how we're going.
I could have said no thanks and walked out when the server told me the price, but you know when someone insults you and you freeze, and it takes you a minute to react? That, except with pastry.

The three-month tribute to #orsonwelles by @cinemathequefr draws to a close on January 18, but a sampling of the "My Name Is Orson Welles" lectures have been preserved on a series of online videos. wellesnet.com/videos-cinemat…

I can’t wait to go to the Berthe Weill art exhibition. She was a little known art dealer in my wonderful neighbourhood of Pigalle.
She has a wonderful collection of Modigliani and Picasso paintings.

I hate not finishing a book but I gave up on #4321 by Paul Auster.
The four different versions of Ferguson’s life did not hold my interest. It was very disappointing. I much prefer his early triologies.

@sophiegrenham I think it’s the wine that hikes up the bill in Dublin. You can get a good bottle of wine for 15€ in Italy.

One of the things I most enjoyed about hospitality in Rome and Orvieto is that everything we ate and drank seemed to cost 30% less than it would be in Dublin. Now, believe me, places like Rome can help you part with your hard-earned moolah, but each time we looked at a bill, we couldn't believe how low the sum was. We often thought the house gave us the wrong chit.
In Italy, there is such thing as a good quality three-course meal in a reputable restaurant for under €120 with service charge and wine. It felt like 2005 again. I'm definitely going back. Is it lower taxes, rents, much higher turnover? What is it?

@sophiegrenham Venice is known for the tramezzino sandwich - soft white bread, crusts off, generously stuffed with fillings like tuna and artichoke, shrimp and egg, or creamy cheese and vegetables.

@sophiegrenham I lived in Venice for 9 months as a student. It was great to find cheap gondolas and good bars off the beaten track.
It was also great to take the vaporetto up the canal in the mornings.
