For too long, not every neighborhood has had equal access to tree canopy. That changes today. NYC’s first-ever #UrbanForestPlan lays out a path to a cooler, healthier, more equitable city, with a goal of 30% canopy by 2040. Read the plan: nyc.gov/assets/climate…

There were at least 4 Ospreys fishing on Prospect Lake today. They make few failed attempts before they succeed in catching a fish, like at the end of this film. Video by Gus Keri.

We need to talk a bit about how utterly absurd the March heatwave was in the USA. This heatwave would have been impossible without a boost from climate change, but even with climate change it remains a deeply unlikely event. A thread looking at some of the numbers. 🧵

Due to low humidity and wind, the risk of fire hazards, especially in parks, open spaces, and construction sites, is more elevated than usual in NYC. Please avoid outdoor burning such as from grills, ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished, and report any smoke or fire to 911 immediately. Subscribe to @NotifyNYC for emergency alerts. @FDNY

It frustrates me that people get mad when a severe weather event underperforms. There are almost always some "failure modes" in forecasts, and do you REALLY want homes flattened or people to lose their lives?? Come on!!!

I study measles. I’ve seen the devastating toll it takes on children’s immune systems It drives immunological amnesia and erases parts of protective immune memory and sets kids up for secondary infections months and years later Its not benign nytimes.com/2025/04/02/opi…

As #NYC digs itself out of all of this snow, check in to make sure your local catch basins are clear of debris, and remember not to bury catch basins and hydrants if you're on shoveling duty, so these vital pieces of infrastructure can continue to do their job!

NYC Emergency Management
NYC Emergency Management@nycemergencymgt·
Today, we're proud to announce a new era for emergency management in New York City.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has appointed Christina Farrell as Commissioner of NYCEM—a leader whose experience and vision match this moment.

For more than three decades, Commissioner Farrell has been at the center of New York City's most critical moments. Commissioner Farrell built NYCEM's external affairs and community engagement work from the ground up—forging partnerships with elected officials, community-based organizations, private sector partners, and neighborhood leaders in every corner of every borough. She grew CERT and Ready New York into programs that put preparedness directly in the hands of the people who need it most.

Her record reflects what effective emergency management demands: operational excellence and deep community trust. Plans and logistics that work. Relationships and communication that hold when it matters most.

Under Mayor Mamdani's leadership, we're ready to build on this foundation—strengthening preparedness, deepening community partnerships, and delivering for 8.5 million New Yorkers.

That's the work ahead. That's the city we're building together.

Commissioner Farrell, congratulations. New York City is ready.

Let's get to work.

🥶 NYC 7-Day Outlook: This weekend’s wind chill is dangerous and life-threatening. Wind chills drop to subzero around -10°F to -12°F Saturday and Sunday. Frostbite is possible in minutes. Limit time outdoors and cover all exposed skin. Exposed skin can freeze quickly. Numbness, pain, and loss of feeling are early warning signs, and can lead to permanent deep tissue damage, and in some of the worst cases if treatment is delayed, amputation. Monday feels near freezing, with wind chills around 30°F. Cold remains a concern, especially in the morning and evening. Tuesday feels closer to 15°F. Prolonged time outdoors can still be dangerous without proper layers and face protection. Wednesday is the “warmest” day of the week, even though it stays below freezing. Wind chills rise into the mid to upper 20s. This is the best window for errands and outdoor tasks, but winter protection is still needed. Thursday cools back to around 20°F, with biting winds making it feel colder at times. Friday feels like the low to mid teens again, bringing renewed cold stress risks heading into next weekend. Temperatures remain below freezing all week. Existing snow and ice will not melt and may refreeze overnight, creating slippery conditions. Cold stress, frostbite, hypothermia, frozen pipes, and power disruption remain risks all week. Dress in layers. Cover hands, ears, and face. Check on older adults and neighbors. Call 311 if you see someone vulnerable who needs help, or to find the nearest warming center. You can also visit nyc.gov/warmingcenters Stay informed with @NotifyNYC. Visit nyc.gov/beready for winter weather tips.
