@Shine_holon @KonstantinKisin @cjsnowdon Nope. Argentina took out debt with rules that meant they just could not print their own currency because they did that so many time. UK has no such constraints. Our sovereign debt cannot default.

@John_Stepek @jemimajoanna This chart is misleading by. Check out the % owned by the top .000001%. That’s gone exponential. Those of us on the right need to deal in facts…including where these are raised by those in the left whatever their motivation.

This is an amazing chart showing how much wealth inequality in Britain has *fallen* over the past century - taken from this Quillette piece on Channel 4's failure to fact-check the whole premise of its Gary Stevenson documentary quillette.com/2026/07/14/gar…

@Helen_Whately @Conservatives 1. Where is NZ in this data? We are OECD members and Datawatch is just scared of our superior physical superiority. 2. UK Number 1 at something - all that tennis elbow must really hurt.

The number of people claiming disability benefits has doubled in 7 years. We have the highest rate of disability in the OECD. This isn't a natural increase. @Conservatives will tackle the flawed incentives and focus on supporting those who need it most.
Harriet Sergeant@HarrietSergeant

What’s going on here? Human biology stays the same. But in this OECD graph, it’s geography that dictates disability prevalence - and seems to peak where state support is most generous. It must be something in the water.

@JohnHealey_MP Labour marches fares up to the top of the hill and then claims glory for marching them down, back to where they started. Go find the missing £20bn for the security of this great country without just borrowing it or raising yet more taxes and I will start taking you seriously.

We’re capping bus fares at £2 for everyone throughout 2027, slashing fares by a third for millions of people. This comes after a cut to VAT on electricity bills. This is how we start to build a new economy, create new hope, and advance working people across the country.
Andy Burnham@andyburnham

For too long, people have said that cheaper transport isn't an option. I don't accept that. l've done it before and now I'm doing it again: a £2 cap on bus fares for millions across the country.

@ShabanaMahmood @andyburnham Right person. Right approach. I might not totally agree with your policy package, but you are giving the Labour Party a chance of winning the next election. Stop the boats and secure the border - or go home as the next bunch of incompetents.

It is an honour to remain as Home Secretary in @andyburnham’s Cabinet. I may be biased, but it's the best job in the business. We have begun the work of major reform, to make our streets safer and our immigration system fair for all. Now let’s finish the job.

This is what the opposition to @garyseconomics is failing to address - it's the top 0.000001%, not the 1% that we have to deal with. This has not happened before. I don't agree with Gary's proposals, but the 'nothing to see here - Gini coefficient has not changed' crowd are wrong

"Trans ex-Labour candidate is charged over posts in wake of Ann Widdecombe's death." This man, "Heather" Herbert is obviously a disgusting human being. But he's entitled to express his opinion of Ann Widdecombe, no matter how horrible. He didn't incite violence so there was no crime. He must be free to say what he thinks, and we are free to judge him - including his employers, depending on his contract. But it's not a police matter. Free speech is for everyone, not just for people we agree with.  dailymail.com/news/article-1…

@stuey_beef Correct. Except the gold plated pension is built into the compensation calculation. Check out the Army Pay Board annual report - people like me received less pay each year than market because of the pension. Looking forward to spending taxpayers cash in 2 years.

Retired public sector workers were handed a record £56bn in “gold‑plated” pensions in 2025‑26 – roughly £2,000 torn out of the pocket of every household in the country. Not for schools, not for hospitals, not for policing or defence – for a guaranteed income stream to people who no longer work, under schemes that were never properly funded and never honestly explained to the public. The political class calls this “rewarding service”. What it actually rewards is being on the inside when the deal was written: final‑salary, inflation‑proofed pensions backed by the Treasury, completely insulated from the economic reality facing everyone else. Millions of younger private‑sector workers with fragile defined‑contribution pots, insecure work and no hope of retiring at 60 are being ordered to bankroll comfortable retirements for a state‑sector aristocracy who were promised more than the country ever put aside in cash. This isn’t some accident of history. Governments of all colours signed cheques they knew future taxpayers would have to cash, then buried the true scale of the obligation. Labour now sits on that broken model, refuses to reform it, and pretends the only answer is “tax the rich” – while quietly taxing the young, the renting and the working poor to maintain deals they never voted for and will never receive themselves.

@MerrynSW Stupid taxes create complexity; thoughtful taxes minimise complexity. If we implemented a smoothly progressive land tax we would not have such strangeness. The Swiss do this with their income taxes - a tiny extra % for every CHF earned.

Mansion tax. You have a £2m house. You add a £10k annual liability to it. Now it is no longer worth £2m. So not liable for the mansion tax. How does this work?

Have you noticed that politicians like Torsten Bell rarely mention the government has a pension liability to public sector workers of £1.8 trillion 10 times greater than the amount paid out in state pension.

He makes good points about capital attracting capital and how our children are struggling...and our answers on the right are what?
