There’s a lot of research focused on developing new antimicrobial compounds. As we’ve seen though, bacteria can evolve to protect themselves. So instead, my research takes a different approach, in our lab we study how bacteria communicate.

And I mean this outside of lab too! I used to think that being a good scientist meant working all day and having all the answers. But hobbies make us better scientists and better thinkers

I get asked, especially by younger folk, what they need to study to be a good scientists and the truth is there is no right answer. Study what you're passionate about because there are ways to combine your passions.

One of my favorite things to do is baking. And there was a time I thought it was incompatible with science, but now I realize it makes me a stronger scientist. Half of my experiments involve playing around with “ingredients” and timing until I can get the perfect conditions.

@NaturalistDara I've found similar with books in the past. Writing a book takes so much effort and can be all-consuming. Doing PR is tiring too - and you've had a LOT of PR to deal with (& book 2. & lockdown. & life). Be kind to yourself. You've put something wonderful into the world.
