@mcsquared34 By traditional measures, violent crime of all kinds is down to historic lows, but this ignores that the biggest crimes going are wage theft and collusion (made infinitly easier by digital tech) and the worst violence is in our lower life expectancy/higher infant mortality rates.

The Chinese president stood on a stage in Shanghai and laid out China's entire AI playbook in one speech.
It was his first-ever in-person appearance at the World AI Conference. I went through the whole thing and pulled out everything that matters.
- he opened with his signature maxim that great changes unseen in a century are unfolding across the world.
- he said AI development should not be a solo performance by a single country but a symphony of international cooperation.
- he reaffirmed China's commitment to open source AI in the name of openness and shared benefit.
- he warned against overstretching the concept of national security in AI, where one country puts its own security above everyone else's.
- he said China opposes the emergence of new historical injustices in AI, one of the strongest-worded lines in the speech.
- he pledged 5,000 AI training opportunities for developing countries over the next five years, naming ASEAN, the Arab League, the African Union, CELAC, the SCO, and BRICS.
- he committed to giving 30 countries access to a Chinese AI weather system that provides early disaster warnings.
- a day before the speech, 29 countries signed the agreement creating a new World AI Cooperation Organization headquartered in Shanghai.
strip away the politics and one thing stands out to me. he didn't pitch benchmarks or chatbots. he pitched AI as infrastructure, weather warnings for countries that lose thousands of lives to storms they never saw coming, and training programs for regions the AI boom has skipped.
meanwhile most of the Western AI conversation revolves around which lab ships the next frontier model.
I don't care who wins the race. I care whether the computing power reaches the people who need it.

It's day 13 of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip and we've just arrived in one of Xinjiang's weirdest towns, at least in terms of city-planning: it's called "Tekes Bagua City" (特克斯八卦镇, "te ke si ba gua zhen") and it was entirely planned according to the I Ching (Book of Changes), a 3,000 years old Chinese philosophy classic. Specifically, it's in the shape of a "Bagua" which I'd describe as "a philosophical shape based on the yin-yang theory". If you want a quick "explain me the yin-yang theory like I'm 10 years old," my eldest 10-year old daughter did a very decent job explaining it in the second video 👇 The Bagua figure is basically the consequences of the yin-yang theory, as a drawing. Each "gua" - there are 8 of them - represents a different combination of yin and yang. For instance the "Li (离/離)" gua is fire: two yang lines with a yin line in the middle ☲. The idea is that from the interplay of just two opposite forces, you can generate the entire complexity of the world. Tekes Bagua Town is basically that idea, as a town, with each area of the city a specific "gua." This city shape actually has some interesting concrete advantages: for instance Tekes is one of the only cities in China with zero traffic lights! The Bagua shape means the city works as a series of concentric ring roads connected by 8 radiating avenues, so traffic flows continuously in circles rather than stopping at intersections - essentially the whole town functions as one giant system of roundabouts. Ancient Chinese philosophy accidentally solved modern traffic engineering 😅
