"Politics shouldn’t be a last refuge for those who have done nothing else. It should be a duty taken up by people with busy schedules and something to offer," writes @KemiBadenoch.

Elon Musk’s role in catapulting humankind to the stars may make him, in retrospect, a hero of the age. What a shame that he is perpetuating some of humanity’s most primitive ideas, too econ.st/4feyjRt

This is the Horloge of the Conciergerie, installed in 1371, and it is considered the oldest public clock in Paris. When it was first placed here, it was revolutionary. Most people did not own clocks. Time was announced by church bells. This was one of the first times Parisians could actually see the hour displayed in the street.
The clock was ordered by King Charles V, when the Conciergerie was still part of the royal palace. A public clock was not just practical. It was political. It showed royal power and control over the city.
The rich decoration you see today mostly dates from the late 16th century, under King Henry III. The crown and royal coat of arms sit above the dial. The blue background is covered with golden fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. The two female figures beside the clock represent Law and Justice, a reminder that this building later became a courthouse and prison.
For many years, the clock looked dark, faded, and almost forgotten. But it has been carefully restored in 2010. The blue background was refreshed, the gold details were brought back to life, and the entire façade now looks much brighter and closer to its original royal appearance. What we see today is the result of that restoration work.
