Borussia Dortmund's record signing is still Ousmane Dembele at €35m. That was 10 years ago. They might claim they can't challenge Bayern, which is fair. But they need to start acting like the big club they are in the market. Surely BVB can spend more than €35m.

Not if you find them when a) they’re young enough to not cost that much, b) they‘re playing in places where not many clubs are paying enough attention, c) you develop them yourself in your own academy, or d) some combination of the above. We used to be better at this than everyone. We‘ve been behind multiple clubs just in Germany in this department for at least a half-decade. (Thankfully our academy is getting fixed.)

We have been spending like the big club we are. We spent more than €90 million in two of the last four summers, €80 million in another, and €60 million in another. The problem is we haven‘t been getting value for money. We spent more than we took in for Haaland on three attempts to replace him with a target man striker, and none of them provided anything like the quality that he did. Meanwhile Ekitike was sold twice in this period for about €30 million. We’ve set tons of money on fire signing players with low technical quality who don‘t even address the gaps on player profiles that we‘ve had in the squad for a while. We‘ve needed technical 1v1 wingers, controlling midfielders, progressive passers in midfield, and central creators for a half-decade. And every window, we‘ve bought center forwards and box-to-box midfielders. Make it make sense.
