Focused on grassroots coaches but I believe many of the messages apply to youth coaches involved with the more talented players, and youth football in general. youtu.be/9qR9RcEfbJ4?si…

Embrace chaos as the core reality! Games are inherently unpredictable: opponents adapt, conditions shift, mistakes happen, momentum swings. Training must mirror this “beautiful storm” rather than neat grids & choreographed predictable patterns which build false confidence.

It seems to me that a football team meets the definition of a Complex Adaptive System and a CAS operates better using self-organisation. Coaches would therefore be better advised to facilitate self-organisation rather than stifle it
JOGO FUNCIONAL@JOGOFUNCIONAL1

New article- Could a team be totally autonomous? The idea of a team not having tactics is often laughed at, I believe it’s the future of football. I explain how if we start to understand synergies, adaptive systems & autonomy this can be achieved. jogofuncional1.blogspot.com/2025/10/could-…

Big teams use predominantly positional attacks. Defences are now able to go man to man more often and negate positional attacks. Positional coaches don’t like trying to outplay man to man defences because it requires too much movement. Use set pieces/long balls to score instead.

GENK GOALKEEPER GETS HUGS FROM LIÈGE FANS On Sunday, RFC Liège supporters reflected on a dramatic moment off the pitch. After Brent Stevens, goalkeeper of Jong RC Genk, saved a penalty, there was a warm applause from the stands. The show of support from the Liège fans was meant as a pat on the back for Stevens, who recently lost his father. 'That was for dad, who passed away last Saturday after a long illness', Stevens said after the final whistle in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad. 'When I heard that I would be making my debut, I was happy, but I also had mixed feelings. Dad would have wanted me to play', Stevens continued, who was regularly sung to during the match. After the final whistle, the debutant fell into the arms of the RFC Liège supporters, who gave Stevens a hug and expressed their support. That moved Stevens, who could not prevent a defeat for Jong RC Genk (3-1). 'What the Liège players and supporters showed before and after the game exceeded all my expectations', the goalkeeper stammered. 'They showed a lot of respect. That shows that things can be different in football. Hats off to the people of Liège.'

@CassiusKiani Also applies to sport, although most practitioners are not even aware of it. In the football (soccer) domain, Ackoff’s work has been a major influence at the Sydney FC Academy for 10 years

@sbmuckle @stirling_j I then showed Brazil playing through the opponent’s block, with players who are comfortable playing in limited space, where they seemed to be saying ‘you want us to go wide…so why would we do what you want us to do?’

It’s actually not ‘overload to isolate’. We don’t gather in the ball zone on the side with the predefined intention of attracting opponents to switch to the open side (if that happens naturally then ok) We gather in the ball zone to advance through combinations in the ball zone.

@sbmuckle @stirling_j It was 2008; highlighted the trend towards compact zonal defending using Milan, Chelsea and Man U in UCL as examples. Idea being ‘we want to protect central areas and we want you to go wide’

@singh_harjiv Harjiv, we have known about CAS for decades…are you saying that it is still rarely applied in Sport Science?

A total of 21 players under the age of 18 debuted for our NPL side this season 🎓 We recap what was a brilliant year for the Sydney FC Academy as more youth were given a chance than ever before! #SydneyIsSkyBlue

‘Deep down, it seems that we just want to control everything in football. Having security and certainty that there is right and wrong, better and worse.’ 👇🏼⚽️@marcusarboes

Treinadores ultrapassados... (?)

Always good to see young players get playing time in older age groups, at the right time of course. Here’s U14 Ethan Fletcher taking the field in the U18s today. Bravo, Ethan! @SydneyFC
