@guyatthediner another issue i have is "truthspace," or rather "the real" as a subset of all ideas is a *subset.* an AI that expands beyond that is in fact worse in the same way that an RNG producing novels by random text is potentially writing all texts but is practically useless

Suppose that General Intelligence can be represented as a bounded sphere (this may be a contradiction in terms). How many dimensions does it have?

Human geometric intuitions often break down in higher-dimensional spaces. For instance, in a high-dimensional sphere, volume is overwhelmingly concentrated near the surface.

@celinedionysus_ (tbc I just meant most evangelicals probably weren't directly offended when the episcopalians were saying it.)

@celinedionysus_ Ppl think it's all woke signalling but a) b) a lot of the super woke episcopalians are, like, actually thinking and b) it's a pretty theologically diverse community anyways.

@celinedionysus_ Yeah I should have added about five asterisks because most authors don't get to choose their titles anyways 🙏.

@celinedionysus_ and they end up getting air-dropped into podcasts to say stuff like "research is now showing that trauma is a feeling that happens to you — and the critical thing is that we haven't been talking about this in the church."

@joburgai If by chance you're not familiar with the work of @rao2z , you might find it worthwhile to check it out. Right or wrong, "it's in the training data" is a better-refined argument than it is commonly understood to be.

@joburgai imo it's very easy to miss the boat here. There are lots of ways for memorization to slip in, and juxtaposing "memorization" and "generalization" is a bit of a red herring to begin with (surely a calculator generalizes too — we need better language than this).

"Finding a 0-day vulnerability" seems like exactly the kind of thing an LLM+ should be unusually good at? "Iterate in this well-understood, bounded space. Slip through any cracks you find." Am I missing something?

So eg you don't say "but it's in the training data!!" primarily when an LLM correctly performs a complex calculation with novel numbers — though, often enough, it's relevant there too.
