love it when some EDM song samples audio from the Apollo missions; the quindar tones still go incredibly hard

honestly what I wanna know is: why the delta-wing planform despite being low subsonic?

the low-cost low-subsonic recip-engine+pusher-prop dorito-planform designed for proliferated (and optionally loitering) precision strike and stressing air defense systems actually has a longer history

The US copied the Shahed drone. When was the last time the US copied an adversary's weapon? It was fifty years ago, when the US copied a Soviet folding float bridge! What is particularly striking is that the Shahed is entirely indigenous. foreignaffairs.com/iran/irans-dro…

@sigfig arguably in describing an accident sequence where pilot hubris ignored the airframe manufacturer and the ecstasy of high flight led to pushing it outside certificated flight envelope conditions; the Icarus story was a foretelling of the Pinnacle Airlines Flight 3701 crash

people misunderstand the icarus story. the problem was not that he flew too high. it's that the wings were made of beeswax, which offered very little resistance to heating. with modern materials he would have had no problems. we can fly as close to the sun as we want now

This is almost as janky as the time I crossthreaded a bolt into a Toyota aluminum engine block which shredded the first couple mm's of thread; and the solution was just fuckin' dremeling out the crossthreaded thread section from the block; and using the remaining good threads

learned that when craniomaxillofacial surgeons strip threads they just up the size of the screw and try again. this is adorkably janky.

some access-controlled roads/driveways/parking lots/etc use these to automatically open the gate when people leave ...you can often trip them from outside (and thus get in) by shoving a ladder under the gate

I had a buddy in college (prone to tall tales) who told me that there were secret sensors embedded in the pavement and if you didn’t pull your car up far enough the light wouldn’t turn green. He was right?? All these years I thought it was just a fantastic tale he told me.
