Thomas Massie is that guy you knew in college who claimed to know everything there is to know about rock music who derisively called *any* band that achieved any commercial success a "sell out." His favorite bands were a bunch of totally unknown indy groups, none of whom ever achieved any commercial success, although he sanctimoniously would remind any one within earshot how advanced his musical tastes were because everything he liked was so obscure, and he had a sweet collection of concert t-shirts for concerts nobody had ever heard of. He would sit on the edge of parties sipping the same beer all evening from the same red Solo cup, constantly criticizing the playlists and the host's taste in music. Meanwhile, he never performed in a band himself, never held a party himself, and never got any dates. After sophomore year he dropped out to study somewhere urban and pure where everyone was as advanced as he thought he was, but he ended up just staying in his mother's basement in the suburbs until he became a Sam Goody's assistant manager. You knew the guy. That's Thomas Massie.
