@morganhousel My mom almost exclusively gave us homeopathic medicine. I grew up thinking medicine and drugs basically don't do anything. Boy let me tell you discovering Nyquil and Sudafed in my college years was life changing. Real drugs are awesome!

You see the placebo effect in young kids. Give them Advil when they're sick and THIRTY SECONDS later they say, "It's working, I feel better."

In the closing months and years of WW II, Hitler purged most of his top generals and military staff as reality began to sink in that Germany was going to lose the war. He replaced most of his officers with yes men who had little to no combat experience. China is doing the same thing. Xi is purging his top military brass because they're giving him the reality of the situation: the Belt and Road initiative is failing, they don't have the military capacity to slow down the United States in any meaningful way and they've lost the resource war in Venezuela and Iran. Zhang Youxia was reportedly removed for telling Xi that the PLA would not be ready to invade Taiwan in 2027. This is why dictatorships always ultimately fall and why democratic systems are superior. When you have an authoritarian who's been in power for too long they lose sense of the real world because everything around them says otherwise. Their ego grows out of control and refuses to let them accept their shortcomings. Mao had this problem and now Xi has it. We're watching the closing few scenes in China's global project.
