44 years ago, on May 14, 1982, Arnold Schwarzenegger walked into American theaters with a sword in his hand and changed my imagination forever.
"Conan, what is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women."
I was just a kid the first time I watched Conan the Barbarian. I knew nothing about Nietzsche, Howard, or sword and sorcery. I only knew that this half-naked man walking through the wild lands with a sword bigger than me was everything I wanted to be. Free. Strong. With no masters.
Then came Robert E. Howard's books, and I discovered Conan wasn't just Schwarzenegger: he was a Cimmerian born under a leaden sky, a thief, a mercenary, a king.
The pulp tales of the 1930s that invented an entire genre. Then the Marvel comics by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, the Frazetta paintings that looked like they'd been brushed in blood.
Then the video games. And above all Conan Exiles, where I could finally walk myself, in my own sunburned skin, through those lands. Build. Survive. Fall and rise again.
This whole imaginary, sword and sorcery, has become my language. When I write, when I draw, when I dream up worlds, there's always that red sun over a steppe, always a crude weapon in someone's hand, always a man alone against something greater than himself.
As a child, Conan taught me the first lesson: survival makes you strong. The Wheel of Pain forges him into what he will become.
That which does not kill us makes us stronger, the line that opens the film, and not by accident. But growing up I learned the second lesson too: sooner or later, you have to step off the Wheel. You can't stay chained to your own suffering forever, even if it shaped you.
And then there's the third lesson, the most uncomfortable one. Howard puts it in Conan's mouth in Beyond the Black River:
"Civilized men are more discourteous than savages, because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split."
The civilized world can be crueler than the Barbaricum. Out there, among the steppes and forests, violence at least is honest. In civilization, cruelty wears a tie, smiles, signs you a contract.
In the Barbaricum you are naked, you are alone, but you are free. And maybe that's why I keep going back, every time I write, every time I play, every time I dream.
Crom does not listen to me. But that's how it should be.

@cb_doge X's algorithm seems to reward monothematic instead of real people with many interests, Leonardo da Vinci would be unknown, and cuts you off from the communities that interest you. A disaster.

𝕏 just open sourced its recommendation algorithm today on GitHub.
Instagram and Meta are still keeping their algorithms completely closed. No code. No audits. No visibility for the public.
This raises an important question: What’s stopping Mark Zuckerberg from open sourcing Meta’s algorithm?
It is because they want to maintain full control over what people see and what narratives get amplified or suppressed.
• When algorithms stay secret, there’s zero real accountability. Platforms can deny bias or shadowbanning because no one can check the actual code.
• Even people who worked on similar systems have described them as “black boxes” difficult to fully understand or control what harmful or manipulative content gets pushed.
• X’s move allows anyone to inspect how content is ranked. Meta’s closed system leaves users guessing while the company holds massive hidden power over information.
• True transparency removes the ability to secretly shape public narratives. Closed algorithms make it much easier to control what reaches people without anyone knowing why.
One platform is opening the system for everyone to see.
The other appears comfortable keeping it hidden.

@teslaownersSV So from what I understand, it rewards single-topic profiles while a person with many interests in different topics is penalized.
Leonardo da Vinci would be ignored by the algorithm.

NEWS: 𝕏 has open sourced its latest recommendation algorithm on GitHub.
That makes 𝕏 the only major social platform publicly sharing the code behind its core recommendation system.
It’s a major transparency move in an industry where most algorithms operate entirely behind closed doors.
Developers and researchers can now directly examine how content ranking and recommendations work on the platform.
