I think it might be a golden opportunity for fintech and for people to up-skill with finance and technology. Between the CPA shortage and the anticipated increase of accountants retiring, accounting software is going to take over and we will need people skilled in both.

I cannot imagine a better time to be a CPA or EA. The public accounting industry is roughly 25% understaffed. A recent article I read says the public accounting industry is understaffed by 340,000 people. Most people think the tax pro shortage will continue to get worse. I think it will get worse. When you work in an industry that is understaffed by 25% and understand that it takes a minimum of 5 years in the industry to properly train a new CPA or EA on how to handle those things typically encountered in a firm that handles taxes, bookkeeping, etc. it becomes apparent that those people who get their credentials are going to do very well financially. The sky is the limit for an EA or CPA! #cpa #ea #tax #aicpa

@JKim_Tran But at this point I’m viewing it as a new skill and not a guarantee path to stability bc i don’t think that exists anymore unless you go into healthcare 😭 Luckily this bachelors program is affordable and accelerated so the opportunity cost is low! Should be done by Jan ‘26!

@JKim_Tran Thank you! I have considered the automation of accounting as a huge drawback 😅 Ive immersed myself into a community of folks who have gone thru similar things and chose this path and as of now it seems safe. And applicable to a broader range of roles (finance, auditing, etc)

@JKim_Tran Yes exactly- it’s almost like getting trapped but in a good way 😂 But it does make it tricky. In my case, they are offshoring everyone with my title so I am expecting to be laid off by the end of the year, so I am having to get creative on my resume to make my title more broad

@haileyjocodes You can change your title to a more "relatable" but very adjacent job title on your resume. I assume that the high pay also keeps people there, as they become extremely complacent and comfortable.

Career tip of the day that I wish I knew when I graduated college 5 years ago- Try to avoid hyper-specific, corporate-jargony job titles. This is very common at larger corporations, but I find that it is very hard to translate those titles/responsibilities to other companies

I currently work for a healthcare staffing agency and there are titles that quite literally ONLY apply to travel healthcare staffing but are very high-paying. Many of my colleagues are locked into this company forever because of how specific their role is

My unpopular career opinion that I recently changed my mind about is that work and life are very much the same. I used to think that work was JUST paycheck and a means to live life outside of work, but when you spend 8hrs a day doing something, that takes up a lot of your life.

I would love to connect with anyone else who has pivoted into finance or accounting later in life, or anyone in the field really! I plan to go through an accelerated Bachelors program through WGU, and I constantly see really amazing success stories from others who did the same

Like I said, nothing is set in stone, and I have researched almost every career path possible over the last month since learning that I will get laid off, and #Accounting seems to be the safest bet for job security and growth over time. Plus I love numbers lol

Returning from my long X hiatus to announce that I am getting laid off! I am obviously super bummed but looking forward. My role was sales/account management-adjacent, so if anyone has leads for any industry (or really any role) I would love to take a look!

Anyway- I love the community I have on here and want to continue posting regardless of whether or not it’s coding/tech related. I love having this space to get career advice and network!
