Witnessing the public suffering of the homeless is indeed uncomfortable. It is uncomfortable because it forces you to see the depths of state and communal failure, and to acknowledge your own complicity.

"I would simply never let myself become poor or have a mental health crisis in public" is exactly the type of attitude you would expect to see expressed more or less explicitly in a broken society where what passed for normality was as pathologically malignant as ours

this is so achingly poignant. and to further albert's point, someone once told me a lot of homelessness works like this: "it's not necessarily about running out of money. you just happen to run out of people." as it was, jordan clearly had no people there on that train.

“people deserve to feel safe in their own city” yes! obviously! and “people” includes those made to live perilous lives due to an ever diminishing safety net and increasingly open social derision and viciousness

“If a homeless man makes me uncomfortable, the sentence is death” is the kind of argument I think people should be embarrassed to make in public
