I bought this book, mostly as a joke, but there are some great insights into what makes something bad ie: tacky, quickly outdated, too niche/too mainstream.
Good taste is a set of values considered appropriate for the time and ideally age well and increase in value over time.
Bad taste attempts to improve on something that doesn't need improved.
ie: polyester is marketed as better than cotton because it doesn't wrinkle and is a modern science.
Examples of bad taste:
- fashion that feels outdated in a short amount of time
- celebrities who overstay their welcome
- novelties that make you cringe ie: waterbed, lava lamp
- pop music that becomes more embarrassing with time
