OurWorldInData.org is now exactly ten years old! Huge thanks to everyone who made these beautiful years possible. Most of all, the amazing team that joined me during the last decade to do this work! (I had started working on it some years before 2014, but at that time, my idea was to write a book. By 2014, I had the idea to make it an open-access web publication and call it Our World in Data.)

1) Spend more time on problem choice. In science and (non-software) engineering, a typical project for a grad student might involve 1-2 weeks of planning and 2-5 years of execution. That is way out of balance, especially considering that… 4/53

While immediate threat of #Mpox has subsided for most regions, #Mpox remains endemic in many African nations (WHO 2023). Thus, the threat for another global outbreak remains.

There are women in Ireland whose legal status depends on their spouses. There are women in Ireland legally prohibited from working. There are women in Ireland with no voting rights. All of those women are migrants. When women become migrants our rights are backtracked.
Teresa Buczkowska 🅾️+@TBuczkowska

What do migrant women need from the Irish Constitution? We need universal voting rights. Proud to be adding a voice to the conversation about the role of the Irish Constitution in shaping the lives of Irish residents and protecting the rights of all.

Applied my mums Irish visit visa through AVATS. Everytime i apply, i send her all the (host) documents digitally, she prints 100s of pages later only 2 be scanned by @VFSGlobal. In 2024 can we not have a portal where one can simply upload the docs digitally? @DeptJusticeIRL

The recent poll conducted by @IrishTimes, which revealed that immigration is the primary concern of voters, indicates that the majority of Irish people are not racist. Instead, they are expressing valid concerns about the significant influx of immigrants without sufficient resources and services to support them. Rather than stating, "We don't want immigrants of a specific color or religion," what people are truly expressing through this poll is, "You have not adequately addressed the housing crisis for young people in this country, so why are you bringing in such a large number of immigrants?" The government displayed a remarkable determination to accommodate refugees in the last few years, with changes in planning laws and significant financial investments. However, people are questioning why the same level of commitment was not shown in taking care of the indigenous population. Instead of being heard and having their concerns addressed, people are consistently being labeled as racists and xenophobes whenever they express their worries. It is crucial for the government to listen to the Irish people and address their concerns, as failing to do so may inadvertently push well-intentioned individuals towards the minority of individuals who are racist and exploiting the current situation. I was invited yesterday at @TheHardShoulder and discussed this with Kieran. You can listen to the program here: newstalk.com/podcasts/highl…
