Heartbroken Simon Thomas reveals the deep shame he still carries over his alcoholism after his wife Gemma’s tragic death left their young son without a mum The former Blue Peter presenter, 53, lost Gemma aged just 40 to acute myeloid leukaemia in 2017, just three days after her diagnosis. Simon turned to a bottle of vodka a day to cope with the grief and tried to hide it from their son Ethan, who was only eight at the time. Simon said: 'He began to cotton on as the months went on. The reason why Daddy would never let him have a sip of his Diet Coke in the evenings wasn’t because it had caffeine in. 'Well, it was partly that, “it’s not great for your bedtime, Ethan” but it’s because Dad had something in there he shouldn’t and I’ve left him with all those memories and that’s… that’s probably, in terms of my recovery from all of that period, almost been harder than letting go of the alcohol. It’s been letting go of the shame'. He described the whole period as a “massive life earthquake” that tore his family apart.

End of Football Focus. End of an era. No great surprise. Clashed with games, fixtures all over the place and people consume football content differently in a digital era. The Hand of Pod everywhere. Worth remembering that FF showcased plenty of great interviews, insight & talent over past 52 years 📺🙌
Match of the Day@BBCMOTD

An incredible 52-year journey comes to an end. Following extensive consideration, BBC Sport has made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Football Focus at the end of this season. First broadcast in 1974, Football Focus is a testament to the brilliant team who have worked on it over the years and, of course, the audience. The programme has been a staple of the BBC’s football coverage for decades, providing fans with interviews, analysis and stories from across the game ahead of the weekend’s fixtures. But changing audience behaviours mean fans are now increasingly consuming football content in different ways and we need to respond appropriately as we face difficult decisions around how the licence fee is spent. Fans are accessing discussion, highlights, analysis and news through digital platforms and on-demand viewing and as viewing habits continue to evolve, it is right that BBC Sport adapts how it brings football coverage to the widest audiences across television, radio, online and to its extensive social platforms. BBC Sport boasts a strong football rights portfolio and is set to significantly expand its digital output this year growing content across BBC platforms, as well as a bold new slate of exclusive shows on YouTube. Featuring fresh formats, big personalities and more frequent, always-on content tailored for digital audiences, the expansion will bring fans closer to the game than ever before delivering more high-quality, accessible and engaging football coverage at scale. We will release further details on these plans in the coming months.

This is probably going to ruffle some feathers but it has to be pointed out. Living a “comfortable life” or a “nice life” is not a human right. The state should not be required to ensure that you don’t have to sell your house or that you can afford comforts. £12,500 alone is not enough to live a comfortable life - but I think it is more than enough to survive. If you want to have a comfortable life in retirement, sell your house, earn some extra income, or save money before you retire.

🚨UPDATE #Tottenham have been urged to offload Pape #Sarr this summer as the hierarchy believe that he isn’t good enough to play at the highest level anymore. Alfie #Devine is reportedly going to be recalled from #Preston to replace him in the squad. [@spurs_news_1882 | #THFC]

🚨BREAKING #Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly not a ‘fan’ of Xavi #Simons playing style and believes #Tottenham starlet Mikey #Moore is the perfect man to replace him. #Moore has enjoyed a successful spell on loan at #Rangers this season and is expected to be reintegrated into the #Spurs team next season regardless of the division they are in. #Simons future is unknown as of late but reports are suggesting that he could be on the way out this summer due to being unhappy with playing time he has received over the course of his #Tottenham career. Big talk from Romero in the last 24 hours on how you can ‘already see the difference’ under De Zerbi and that he ‘feels responsible’ for the situation Tottenham are in. I want to see a big performance from him today.

🚨 Roberto De Zerbi on the Tottenham fan protests regarding his relationship with Mason Greenwood: “I have seen the statements from the fans, but I am here to save Tottenham from relegation, not to be a politician. I said it in Marseille and I will say it again in London: Mason is my footballing son. When the whole world was against him, he gave everything for me. If the board gives me the budget this summer, he is the very first player I am calling to bring here. The fans have to make a choice — do you want to survive in the Premier League and win, or do you want to complain about the past?”

@TomHCalver I’m curious to know what you hope to gain from stirring the pot like this Tom. Why are you targeting Pensioners when it’s successive Governments you’ve got a beef with. If you think the average State Pension of around £12k is a fortune then you must be mad.
