This exact dogma, in the sense of honoring the Sahaba and not speaking about their mistakes and wars, was established during the time of Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah). Before that, one could publicly speak the truth about any of them. Just imagine the Wahhabiyya, how they defend Saudi Arabia's leaders and say it is Haram to rebel against them. Husayn ibn Ali rebelled against Yazid. Muawiyah and Aisha against Ali. Abdullah ibn Zubayr (ra) did not give his Bay'ah to Yazid. By today's standards, these would all have been either non-Muslims or hypocrites. This is exactly what matters to me and more and more Muslims. It wasn't all peace and love. We should not present wars between companions as mere 'differences of opinion.' To beautify the past through silence or excuses is disgusting, and we will all stand before Allah and be held accountable for it. In sha Allah, Allah will bring down all those who try to make these major conflicts look harmless and will humiliate those who remain silent about them on the Day of Judgment.
