@doc_becca Focus on what you achieved rather than what you previously proposed. That's what counts.

@SeptinLab 3/n. I like the approach of managing a portfolio, like investors do. But that's just a basic blueprint, and adjusting the portfolio is the difficult thing. My thoughts for now, but this is big but under discussed topic.

@SeptinLab 2/n. But if you have expertise then you can get funding on projects that have inertia (not momentum exactly) and so there are reasons to continue. Regarding starting new projects, it's amazing how serendipitous many are and for self-initiated ones what a large energy barrier.

@SeptinLab I think a huge issue in this mid-career phase is the question of how and when to start new projects and to end ongoing projects. They're distinct but both difficult. I think people hold on too long to projects that may not be all that fruitful (that's my problem anyway). 1/n

So let me see if I understand Biorender copyrights. You are required to acknowledge in the legend, every figure you publish or show in a talk that used Biorender? A parallel would be to acknowledge Microsoft Word in every paper you publish. Is this fixed? Ignore? Boycott?

Yo, once again people: for preprints and submitted manuscripts, PLEASE embed the figures and their legends in the text. Life is hard enough already, can't we just do this one thing to make it easier?

@ItaiYanai I don't agree with this statement. I find that ambitious grants are reviewed favorably, and get good 'Significance' scores. Proposing way more than you can do (sometimes called 'too ambitious') gets dinged, but those grants are often unfocused.

The most anti-American aspect of the way grants are evaluated in the US is that it’s not a good thing if reviewers think the proposal is ‘ambitious’.

Cool alert! MAKING CHEESE IN A FLOW CELL. Single-molecule imaging of protease digesting a casein micelle. Transient protease binding events observed while casein signal goes down over time. Also evidence for long-lived processive proteolytic episodes. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
