My cucumbers, I've discovered, are not getting adequately pollinated, so the fruits are not developing evenly. I sprayed the vines with fish fertilizer this morning and layered in compost. A carpenter bee came to visit, so fingers crossed we can get a second round out of this crop. Six jars of pickles is well below our usual yield. Last year we had two harvests and a total of 50 jars. 😐 @karimonstertx

@TracesofTexas I was just reading the opening chapters of H.W. Brands' Lone Star Nation this morning. I never knew all the trials and tribulations of Moses. Amazing guy.

Today's Texas quote of the day is a AWESOME. It finds Moses Austin, Stephen F. Austin's father, writing to Stephen from his (Moses') deathbed. This was Moses' last letter to Stephen before dying. Moses is asking Stephen to take his place and move forward with colonizing Texas. Moses' comment that "a new chance presents itself" may have been the biggest understatement of all time. Here's the quote: "I can now go forward [die] with confidence, and I hope and pray that you will discharge your doubts as to the enterprise. Raise your spirits. Times are changing, and a new chance presents itself." ----- Moses Austin in a letter to Stephen Austin, May 21, 1821. It was this letter and the fact that Mary, Stephen's mother, wrote to him and said, "He [Moses Austin] drew me down to him and with much distress and difficulty of speech told me that it was too late ... that he was going. He begged me to tell you dear Stephen that it was a dying father's last request to tell you to prosecute the enterprise he had commenced" that convinced Stephen to cross the Sabine River in July of 1821 and start a new life as an empresario, persuading families in the United States to move to Texas. When I think of how unlikely it was the series of events that attended the founding of Texas, it's enough for me make another cup of coffee, go out on the porch, ponder it all, and thank my lucky stars that I'm here!
